The Patriots’ offensive line is once again hanging over the team as a real concern, and the latest preseason hit only made the picture look shakier. After spending the last several years losing dependable blockers to injury, retirement, or Bill Belichick’s decision-making, New England is still dealing with the fallout heading into 2026.
There are reasons to think the unit is better than it was a year ago. The addition of Alijah Vera-Tucker at left guard and the move of Jared Wilson to center give the group a different look. But the depth behind them is still a problem, and that showed up in last week’s preseason game against the Colts.
Two linemen left that game hurt: backup center Ben Brown and backup guard Andrew Rupcich. Brown’s injury, based on initial reports, doesn’t sound like something that should sideline him for long. Rupcich’s situation is much worse, though, since he was placed on season-ending injured reserve.
That setback landed just days after the Patriots traded 2024 third-round pick Caedan Wallace, a lineman who had worked at multiple spots over his two seasons with the team. Wallace couldn’t win a major role in New England, and the move to move on from him already looks like it could age badly.
The sting is even sharper because Wallace signed with the Dolphins almost immediately after his release and has already been performing well there. For a Patriots team that needs every bit of offensive line depth it can find, watching a former draft pick settle in with a division rival is a frustrating sight.
At this point in the offseason, teams are making tough roster calls and hoping they don’t come back to haunt them. The Patriots are in that exact spot, and the situation is made worse when a recently cut player starts looking better in a new uniform, especially one in the AFC East.
Wallace isn’t suddenly going to turn the Dolphins into a major threat, and the source material makes that point plainly. Still, if New England runs into more offensive line injuries before or during the season, the Patriots will have every reason to wish they still had him around.
There is still time for the Patriots to patch things up before the regular season arrives. They could add a free agent or two to bolster the depth and give Drake Maye a better setup. That kind of move feels especially important after last year, when the offensive line was one of the team’s biggest issues.
The reality is that not many available linemen are going to change everything. But with roster cuts coming soon, the Patriots may have a chance to claim someone another team lets go. For now, that might be their best path to making sure the line isn’t their weakness again.

The Patriots got a little extra preseason theater from Behren Morton, the seventh-round pick who managed to show off more than one skill set in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Morton handled quarterback duties and also punted three times, averaging 44.3 yards, while adding some real late-game value by leading a winning drive capped by a touchdown pass to Nick DeGennaro.
Mike Vrabel and teammates took notice of the way Morton kept finding ways to help, which is exactly the sort of versatility that can make a young player harder to ignore in August. Scary Injury Briefly Stopped The Patriots Game And Drew An Update
The preseason opener between the Patriots and Eagles was briefly overshadowed before the first drive ever really got going, when Philadelphia running back Ja'Quinden Jackson went down after taking a knee to the head on the opening kickoff. The injury stopped the game and brought an immediate pause to what had been a routine summer tuneup, with Jackson eventually leaving the field by ambulance.
