The New England Patriots and Andrew Rupcich have taken another step in sorting out the interior offensive lineman’s future.
According to the NFL transaction wire, the team reached an injury settlement with Rupcich on Thursday, which sends him through waivers as the weekend approaches and opens the door for another club to claim him. A return to Foxborough down the line is still possible.
Rupcich’s 2026 campaign had already been derailed after ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported last weekend that he suffered a strained MCL in the preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts. The 6-foot-6, 325-pound lineman left in the fourth quarter after logging 58 offensive snaps as the team’s starting left guard and then remained on the sideline for the final minutes of the 13-13 tie.
Even without surgery, the injury led to a stint on injured reserve, and New England moved quickly to reinforce the position by adding Darrian Dalcourt, Joe Michalski and veteran Greg Van Roten.
Rupcich, 27, had been in the mix for a 53-man roster spot this August after spending last season on the Patriots’ practice squad and then signing a futures contract in February. He came into the league as an undrafted free agent with Mike Vrabel’s former Tennessee Titans in 2022 after playing at NAIA’s Culver-Stockton. During his time in the AFC South, he appeared in 12 games and made two starts before joining New England in 2025.
The move marks the second settlement the Patriots have reached in the past week.
New England still has four players on injured reserve for the season, a group that includes running back Myles Montgomery, wide receivers Jimmy Kibble and Jeremiah Webb, and tight end Julian Hill.

Vrabel Just Got Caught In The Patriots' Growing Camp Tension
Training camp has already started to feel a little more unsettled for the Patriots, and Mike Vrabel found himself in the middle of it during a practice when a scuffle broke out and he stepped in to separate players. The brief confrontation turned physical after punches were exchanged, a reminder that camp is as much about managing emotions as installing schemes, especially when the pads come on and the roster starts fighting for position.
Vrabel also had to address another bit of tension when Christian Gonzalez was not on the field because of unresolved contract negotiations, leaving New England without one of its most important defensive pieces at a time when every rep matters. The Patriots will keep moving forward through the absence, but the combination of on-field friction and an unresolved contract situation is adding an early layer of uncertainty to a camp that was supposed to be about building momentum. Patriots Face A Costly Christian Gonzalez Decision At The Worst Time
Christian Gonzalez has already become one of the most important young pieces in the Patriots secondary, which is why the contract situation around him is getting so much attention. Even with his value obvious on the field, he has not signed an extension, and the talks around his future appear to have stalled, leaving New England with a familiar kind of headache when a premium defender is due for a financial decision.
The conversation now has moved beyond just a standard negotiation and into what happens if the sides cannot find common ground. Around the league, teams are watching the market for elite corners, and Sauce Gardners recent trade has offered a model for what a blockbuster deal might look like if it ever came to that. For the Patriots, the question is less about whether Gonzalez matters and more about how much leverage they have left if the situation keeps drifting in the wrong direction. [Read more 🡒]
Patriots May Have A Timely Answer To Their New O-Line Problem
Preseason injuries to backup offensive linemen have nudged the Patriots back into the market, and the timing is awkward given how much roster building still has to be sorted out before the opener. New England already added Greg Van Roten, but the search for more depth appears to be ongoing as the team weighs whether another move could help stabilize the edge of the line.
One name to watch is Kiran Amegadjie, a versatile offensive lineman with a connection to Chicago and a path that could open if the Bears move on. The Patriots have reasons to keep monitoring that situation closely, especially with their own reserve depth suddenly thinner than expected and the need for a workable swing option still very much in play.
