The New England Patriots already swung big this offseason with the trade for A.J. Brown, but his injury has changed the picture for the next several weeks. That opens the door to a different kind of move, and one name worth watching is Arizona Cardinals receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.
According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, multiple teams are interested in Harrison. That makes sense given how little he has been able to get going in Arizona’s offense this season, where he has just one reception for 33 yards through two games.
He also had his struggles last season. Even so, the appeal is obvious: Harrison came out of college as one of the greatest receiver prospects of all time, and a new setting could unlock a lot more than he has shown so far.
For the Patriots, the timing could be ideal if the price is right. If New England can land him without paying a massive premium, it would be hard to argue against at least exploring the idea.
With Brown sidelined, the team needs help in the passing game now, and Harrison would bring real upside at only 24 years old. He has not reached his prime yet, and under Mike Vrabel, there’s a case that his talent could be put back on track.
There’s also the long view. Harrison would be a young piece growing alongside Drake Maye, which gives the Patriots a chance to build something that lasts. And if Brown gets back to full strength, the idea of Brown, Harrison, Romeo Doubs, and DeMario Douglas in the same receiver room is enough to make opposing defensive coordinators sweat.
On the field, Harrison would fit right in as the Patriots’ starting X receiver while Brown is out. He could stretch the defense, pull coverage away from other targets, and give Maye a legitimate big-play option. In the red zone, he would be the kind of strong, athletic target who can win when the quarterback wants to take a shot at the end zone.
Josh McDaniels would have plenty to work with, too. Harrison’s presence would give the offense more room to breathe, and it would also keep the Patriots from having to rush Brown back. Once Brown returns, he would slide back into the outside “X” role, while Harrison could be moved around the formation and used in different ways, whether that means working as a huge slot or a “Z” receiver.
If New England can get Harrison at a bargain, the case is pretty simple: make the call. The Patriots would be adding a player who can help now and grow with Maye going forward.
