The Patriots’ defensive line has become one of the clearest pressure points on the roster, and that’s why another trade idea is already getting attention before training camp even settles in. The pass rush has been the biggest worry for fans and analysts, even with Mike Vrabel saying the group is good enough to work with. The problem is that the unit still doesn’t have a true game-changer, and that showed up during last year’s postseason run.
There are reasons the concern has only grown. Harold Landry is coming back from offseason surgery, rookie Gabe Jacas’ outlook is murkier than it was before, and K’Lavon Chaisson left for the Commanders in free agency. Put it all together, and the Patriots’ defensive line still looks like a spot that needs real help.
That opens the door to a few different paths. New England could look at a free agent such as Jadeveon Clowney.
Or, if the Patriots want to add more than just another edge rusher, they could explore the trade market. One proposal from Wynston Wilcox of FanSided.com would send them after Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter, a move that would come with a hefty price but also a major upside.
Carter has been one of the names most often mentioned as a possible trade candidate this offseason, and he’d give the Patriots a different kind of boost. He isn’t known as a huge sack producer - he had three sacks in 2025 - but he was highly effective against the run and the pass, ranking 9th among 134 qualified interior defensive linemen according to PFF.
The fit in New England is easy to see. A front featuring Carter, Christian Barmore and Milton Williams would give the Patriots one of their strongest defensive lines in years. Wilcox’s proposed return was a 2027 second-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick, and if that kind of deal were available, it would be hard for New England to ignore.
The catch is that the proposal was framed for the Vikings, not the Patriots. Still, if the Eagles would seriously consider moving Carter for that package, there’s no reason New England wouldn’t at least ask the question.
At the same time, the Patriots’ biggest need still appears to be a legitimate pass rusher. If they’re going to part with draft capital of that size, it may make more sense to spend it on an edge player instead of a defensive tackle. But Carter is only 25, and he already has experience being part of a few Super Bowl rosters since entering the league as a first-round pick in 2023.
If New England can’t land Carter, the larger point remains the same: the Patriots need to keep looking for a move that can upgrade the front right now. Waiting only shrinks the list of options.
