The Patriots are still poking around for help in the backfield, and one of the names they checked in on Tuesday was Jamaal Williams.
According to NFL insider Ari Meirov on X, New England brought in the veteran free-agent running back for a workout as the team continues to search for ways to strengthen its ground game. The Patriots have leaned on Rhamondre Stevenson as their lead runner and TreVeyon Henderson as the backup, but the production has been uneven. Henderson missed the season opener with an ankle injury before returning, and through four games the offense is averaging just 3.9 yards per carry, which ranks 18th in the NFL.
Williams would bring a different kind of punch if the Patriots decide to add him. The 31-year-old was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of BYU, spent four seasons in Green Bay, and then had his big breakout with the Detroit Lions in 2022. That year, he ran for 1,066 yards and led the league with 17 rushing touchdowns.
After that, Williams spent two seasons with the New Orleans Saints. In 2024, he appeared in 14 games and finished with 48 carries for 164 yards and a touchdown. Over eight NFL seasons, he has piled up 4,122 rushing yards, 1,310 receiving yards, and 40 total touchdowns.
New England did not sign Williams right away. Instead, after hosting a five-player tryout, the team signed cornerback Al'Zillion Hamilton to the practice squad.
The Patriots also have open roster spots after recently releasing edge rusher Jose Ramirez. Williams was joined at the workout by offensive tackle Cody Ford and tight end Josh Kattus.
For now, the workout keeps Williams in the mix as the Patriots look for veteran depth and a runner who can help them get tougher yards.

Patriots Have A Gabe Jacas Opportunity They Can't Ignore
The Patriots pass rush has been thin enough to make every possible reinforcement worth a look, especially with losses and injuries already testing the depth chart. In that kind of spot, the idea of adding a veteran edge rusher like Khalil Mack from the Chargers carries obvious appeal for New England, not just for what he could still bring on the field, but for the kind of experience he could pass along in the room.
Gabe Jacas is part of why this conversation matters in the first place. The Patriots appear to have a young player whose game shares some traits with Macks, and pairing him with a proven pro could accelerate that development in a hurry. Whether New England decides the price is worth it remains the real question, but the fit is easy to see, and the need is hard to ignore. [Read more 🡒]
Patriots Are Getting Early Proof They Made The Right WR Call
The Patriots spent the offseason reshaping their wide receiver room, bringing in A.J. Brown in a trade and signing Romeo Doubs while moving on from Stefon Diggs and dealing Kayshon Boutte. It was the kind of aggressive reset that can look smart on paper and awkward on the field early, especially after Brown landed on injured reserve and Doubs had a rough start before finding his footing over the last few games.
Romeo Doubs recent improvement has given New England at least a little early validation for how it handled the position, even if the full picture is still developing. Across the league, former Patriots target Michael Pittman Jr. has not exactly stormed out of the gate after being traded to the Steelers, with his production lagging behind the expectations that came with his extension, and that contrast only sharpens how much these receiver decisions matter for a team trying to get the room right. Former Patriots Draft Pick Just Got Another NFL Opportunity
The Falcons backfield shuffle has opened another NFL door for Jam Miller, the former Patriots seventh-round pick who is getting a fresh opportunity in Atlanta. Miller arrives after Atlanta placed undrafted rookie Cash Jones on waivers and moved quickly to fill the spot, a reminder of how fluid the bottom of an NFL roster can be as teams try to balance depth, special teams value and practice-squad flexibility.
Jones and Tyler Goodson were both taken off the active roster and re-signed to the practice squad, though Goodson later landed with the Cowboys. Atlanta now carries three running backs on its active roster, and Miller enters a crowded but movable situation with a chance to show he can stick where other backups have already been cycled through.
