Mike Vrabel’s Patriots opened the season with a collapse, and the fallout didn’t stop at the final whistle.
New England led the Seattle Seahawks 10-0 in Wednesday’s Kickoff Game before it unraveled in the fourth quarter. Drake Maye was at the center of the breakdown, throwing three interceptions in the final period as the Patriots fell 10-13.
That result quickly drew a pointed jab from independent reporter John Frascella, who took aim at Vrabel with this remark:
"The Dianna Russini thing… the Kayshon Boutte thing… and really just the total smugness of his disgusting offseason. So what happens?
You are cruisin' along … AJ Brown gets hurt. You have a nice lead… you lose it.
Then… your quarterback suddenly forgets how to play football. Then… you lose a game you should have won.
That’s Karma, Mike."
Vrabel also had plenty to answer for on the field after the Patriots’ offense stalled out. The ground game never really got going, with Rhamondre Stevenson needing 18 carries to reach 51 yards.
Maye and Corey Kiner combined for 58 yards on 13 rushes. Asked about that production, Vrabel pointed to Seattle’s defense and said:
“They were number 2 in the league in run defense last year. So I’m sure they probably picked up where they left off.
I thought we had some decent runs. Again, not necessarily good enough, but I thought we had some positive runs.
Had a few negative ones.”
The Patriots also had trouble slowing down Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who beat the defense for eight catches, 122 yards and the game-tying touchdown. Vrabel said the issue came down to the team selling out against the run and missing a tackle.
“We were selling out on the run and had a missed tackle. And, I mean, again, if they gain 6 yards, it’s a first down.
You just can’t gain 50. So, that’s, I mean, you got to be able to stop them like we did on 3rd down and then be able to get them on the ground if they throw that on 4th down.”
New England gets its next chance to bounce back at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 20. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET on CBS.
