The New England Patriots are stepping into free agency with a strong hand, fresh off a Super Bowl appearance and with most of their core intact. However, one key player whose future is uncertain is safety Jaylinn Hawkins. After a standout season, Hawkins is on many analysts' lists as a priority re-signing for the Patriots.
Hawkins, now 28, has been a revelation since joining New England. Last season, he became a fixture in the secondary, delivering career-best numbers: 71 combined tackles, three tackles for loss, four interceptions, six passes defended, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and 1.5 sacks. Such production naturally raises his market value, and while Hawkins has expressed a desire to stay, the financial reality of free agency might make that challenging.
Enter Coby Bryant, the Seahawks' standout, whom ESPN's Matt Bowen suggests could be an ideal replacement if Hawkins departs. Bowen argues that Bryant might even be an upgrade on paper. With the possibility of Hawkins leaving, the Patriots would need to fill that gap, and Bryant fits the bill perfectly.
Bryant has been a powerhouse for Seattle, amassing 139 combined tackles, five tackles for loss, two quarterback hits, seven interceptions (returned for 130 yards and a touchdown), 13 passes defended, and two forced fumbles over the past two seasons. His versatility in coach Mike Vrabel's defense, whether playing deep or in split-field alignments, makes him a compelling option. Bryant's ability to aggressively defend downhill adds to his appeal.
While Hawkins only became a full-time starter last season, making direct comparisons tricky, Bryant's consistent rise showcases his potential to bolster the Patriots' defense. Plus, his entry into free agency for the first time since being drafted in 2022 might allow the Patriots to secure him without breaking the bank.
If the Patriots decide not to match the contract Hawkins might command, Bryant emerges as a logical and strategic target. The Patriots' secondary is already a formidable unit, and adding a player of Bryant's caliber would ensure it remains a dominant force this coming season.
