With the 2026 regular season creeping closer, the Patriots still have a messy receiver decision hanging over them. The question is simple enough: do they keep seven pass catchers, or do they cash in one of them for more draft capital?
Kayshon Boutte has been at the center of that discussion for a while now. Rumors have followed him since the start of free agency, even though he’s been productive over the last three years.
Drake Maye has kept making the case for him, too, with Boutte becoming one of his favorite targets. None of that has stopped the noise around Boutte’s future, and the prevailing belief still says it won’t be in New England.
That’s what makes the Patriots’ handling of their preseason game against the Eagles worth a closer look. Instead of using the game as a showcase, they kept Boutte out entirely, and Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard thinks that choice may have said something about how they’re approaching him.

One read on that move is straightforward: if the Patriots wanted to showcase Boutte, or even keep the door open on moving him, getting him some snaps would have made sense. Instead, they left him on the sideline, which could point to a team more interested in protecting him than shopping him.
Of course, there’s another way to look at it. The Patriots may not have wanted Boutte exposed to injury because a setback would kill any trade value and send interested teams in another direction. That would be a different kind of protection, one aimed less at keeping him in Foxborough and more at preserving whatever market he might have.
For now, nobody outside the building knows which version is right. Until someone spells it out, the best anyone can do is read the tea leaves.
Still, it’s at least fair to wonder whether the Patriots are leaning toward keeping him. Boutte could end up working behind A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs, and DeMario Douglas, and that would fit a roster that suddenly has more talent at wide receiver than it’s had in a long time.
That depth creates a real dilemma. It also makes it harder to justify moving on from a player who has produced regardless of who has been throwing him the ball or calling the offense.
Whether the Patriots decide to hold him, trade him now, or move on later because they don’t plan to extend him next offseason, the choice will draw plenty of reaction. Some of that pushback may even come from inside the locker room.
