As the preseason wears on, teams start making uncomfortable decisions, and the Patriots found themselves in that spot with Kayshon Boutte. They moved him to the Houston Texans, and while the return was light - a 2027 seventh-round pick and safety Jaylen Reed - it at least gave New England something instead of nothing.
The reaction was predictable. Fans and pundits didn’t waste much time calling out the modest haul for a player who can stretch the field.
But Boutte had been on the trade block since the start of training camp, which makes it tough to argue the Patriots were sitting on some hidden gold mine. If a bigger offer was out there, it likely would have surfaced already.
Reed gives New England more than just a body for the depth chart. He’s 23 years old, still developing, and comes out of DeMeco Ryans’ aggressive defensive environment in Houston. Safety may not be a premium spot, but he’s not being tossed in as throw-in value.
There was always a case for holding Boutte a little longer and trying to cash in closer to the trade deadline. A team hit hard by injuries and desperate for help could have made a stronger push for him, especially with the way he’s improved year after year.
Still, that scenario comes with plenty of baggage. How much would his production really pop in a situation where A.J.
Brown is soaking up double-digit targets every week and Romeo Doubs is next in line? Even if Boutte kept building his resume, his market may not have moved much at all.
And then there’s the part that matters behind the scenes. Boutte was a pro’s pro and said his piece when asked whether he wanted to be traded.
But word gets around, and a player’s real preference can quietly chip away at leverage. That’s especially true when a deal is being negotiated in public view.
The contract situation also mattered. Players on expiring deals usually don’t bring premium returns at the deadline, because teams trading for them know they may only be getting a rental through the end of the season.
For Boutte, the Texans’ injury issues created a chance to raise his value and line up a stronger payday later. For the Patriots, the return may not be flashy, but it does include a young player with upside and a Day 3 pick. That’s better than watching Boutte leave for nothing.
It’s fair to question whether New England handled the asset as well as it could have. But it’s also true that keeping a disgruntled player around can do real damage. The full verdict on this trade won’t come for at least a year.
