Saquon Barkley doesn’t sound interested in buying the idea that the 2025 New England Patriots were just a lucky team riding a soft path.
When asked about the Patriots, Barkley made it clear he sees more than a one-year flash. “I think they’re a great team,” Barkley said (h/t Mass Live).
“I think they’re a well coached team. I’m not gonna really get into speaking about individuals, I think they’re a great team.
There’s a reason why they made it as far as they did last year, but it’s a new year. It’s a new start and we’re all trying to see where we’re at.
That’s the good thing about joint practicing when you’re able to do that..
But, yeah I’ve got nothing but respect for all those guys over there, and I feel like they have a good chance of going very far.”
That kind of respect lands against a backdrop of plenty of skepticism around New England. Some around the league have been quick to chalk up the Patriots’ run to a favorable schedule and assume the tougher 2025 slate will expose them. Others think a second straight push is too much to ask now that opponents have a full year of Mike Vrabel’s team on film.
But Barkley’s comments point in a different direction, one that matches what joint practices have reportedly suggested: the Patriots were able to hold their own against the Eagles, another Super Bowl contender.
None of that guarantees anything once the games count. The Patriots still have to prove it all over again, and a Super Bowl hangover is always a possibility. Repeating is hard, and Vrabel knows better than to overlook anyone.
Still, there are reasons the Patriots are drawing real attention beyond last season’s finish. They’ve improved from one year to the next, handled most of their roster issues, and Drake Maye getting another full training camp with Josh McDaniels should only help his growth.
Then there’s the addition of A.J. Brown, a move that changes the conversation by itself. Putting one of the league’s most dangerous pass catchers next to a young quarterback can open up an offense in a hurry.
For years, New England made the rest of the league miserable. So of course plenty of people are eager to dismiss them now and wait for the fall. Barkley’s view suggests that might be a mistake.
Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are gone, but the Patriots Way, at least in this telling, is still very much alive.

Mike Vrabel and teammates took notice of the way Morton kept finding ways to help, which is exactly the sort of versatility that can make a young player harder to ignore in August. The preseason opener between the Patriots and Eagles was briefly overshadowed before the first drive ever really got going, when Philadelphia running back Ja'Quinden Jackson went down after taking a knee to the head on the opening kickoff. The injury stopped the game and brought an immediate pause to what had been a routine summer tuneup, with Jackson eventually leaving the field by ambulance.
Philadelphia later provided a reassuring initial update, saying Jackson has strength and movement in all extremities and was being taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. Kayshon Boutte has stayed very much in the mix at Patriots practices, even as his name has started to surface in trade chatter.
