The Patriots are bringing more heft to their defensive front.
Veteran defensive tackle DaQuan Jones is set to join New England on a one-year contract, according to a report from Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Jones is listed at 6-foot-4 and 320 pounds, and the reported deal is worth $3.5 million with a maximum value of $6 million.
Jones, 34, entered the league as a fourth-round pick by the Tennessee Titans in 2014. He spent seven seasons there, including three under head coach Mike Vrabel, and started 97 of 103 combined regular-season and playoff games during that stretch. He then started all 17 games for Carolina in 2021 before moving on to Buffalo, where he added 59 more games - all starts - to his resume.
Over 179 career games, Jones has piled up 394 tackles, 35 tackles for loss, 21.5 sacks and four forced fumbles. He also has a touchdown on one of his three fumble recoveries, and last season he picked off the first interception of his career.
Jones had remained on the market since his Buffalo deal expired in March. He visited the Patriots in mid-August, though no agreement was reached at that time.
His arrival will push New England over the 53-man roster limit, which means another move has to follow. As things stand, the Patriots have five defensive tackles on the roster: Milton Williams, Christian Barmore, Cory Durden, Joshua Farmer and Leonard Taylor.
New England opened its regular season Wednesday night with a 13-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The team returns to practice Monday and will host the Pittsburgh Steelers at Gillette Stadium in Week 2.
