BUFFALO - The Patriots walk into Week 4 with a chance to reset their season, and the stage couldn’t be much bigger: New England against Buffalo, Drake Maye against Josh Allen, and a brand-new Highmark Stadium setting the scene.
Mike Vrabel said this week, "I think you have to be willing to go through some difficult times," Mike Vrabel said this week. "Again, you put everything you have into each week, whether you're on the road or you're at home. If you lose, you have to quickly try to get back to neutral and then figure out who you have available the next week."
That’s the backdrop for a game that feels loaded with storylines. The Patriots are 1-2, the Bills are 3-0, and New England is staring at a tough road test against one of the AFC’s best teams.
The biggest question, as always, starts with Maye. He has the kind of talent that can flip a game in a hurry, and he showed that last season.
But through three games this year, the numbers and the eye test haven’t lined up. He’s had more turnovers than touchdowns in each of the first three weeks, and his decision-making has looked shaky.
If the Patriots are going to steal this one, they need a cleaner, sharper version of their quarterback. A breakout against an undefeated Bills defense would change the conversation fast.
The challenge gets even steeper because Buffalo can beat you in so many ways on the ground. Allen and James Cook form one of the league’s most dangerous rushing combinations, with Cook’s burst and Allen’s power creating constant problems for defenses.
New England has leaned on its run defense, but that unit takes a hit with Christian Barmore ruled out because of a shoulder injury. The Patriots didn’t exactly slam the door on the Jaguars, and this matchup could ask a lot more of them.
Milton Williams, who hasn’t made a major play through three games, may have to carry more of the pass-rushing load. That would put more pressure on Cory Durden and DaQuan Jones to help hold up against Buffalo’s ground game.
The absences don’t stop there. Christian Gonzalez is also sidelined with a shoulder injury, and that leaves New England without two of its best defensive players in a game where it can least afford those losses. Rookie corner Channing Canada is out with a hamstring injury as well, and the Patriots elevated cornerback Kindle Vildor and safety Mike Brown from the practice squad to add depth in the secondary.
That’s a lot to sort through for a defense trying to slow what may be the league’s top offense.
There’s plenty riding on the result beyond one game, too. A loss would send New England to 1-3 and drop the first head-to-head meeting with Buffalo, which would sting in a division race that could get tight quickly.
The Patriots still have home dates with the Las Vegas Raiders and Miami Dolphins, so nothing would be decided in Week 4. But letting the Bills jump out early in the AFC East would not make life any easier.
For now, this feels like a game that could say a lot about where both teams are headed, both in the division and in the wider AFC picture.

Patriots May Have Found A Needed Offensive Bright Spot Up Front
The Patriots 1-2 start has been defined by an offense that has struggled to generate much of anything, which makes any steady development up front worth noticing. One of the few encouraging signs came in Week 3 against Jacksonville, where Jared Wilson handled his work well and gave New England a cleaner look along the interior than it has often had through the first month.
Wilson has been working mainly at center this season, and the progress he has shown from earlier games is part of why his latest outing stood out. He did not allow a pressure or commit a penalty, and that was enough to land him on PFFs Team of the Week, a small but meaningful bright spot for a line trying to help stabilize an offense that badly needs it. Bills Let Another AFC East Game Slip Away For One Reason
The Patriots walked out of Buffalo with a 29-26 win in a game that had plenty of the usual AFC East friction, plus a few swings that kept it from feeling settled until the final stretch. New England got touchdowns from Romeo Doubs and Efton Chism III, while Buffalo answered with a Josh Allen strike to Keon Coleman, and the game had the kind of back-and-forth edge that has made these matchups so hard to separate in recent years.
What stood out, though, was how often the Bills were able to lean on James Cook on the ground and still never fully take control of the game. Buffalo also had chances fueled by multiple Drake Maye turnovers, but the Patriots kept finding enough offense and enough answers to leave the division rival still searching for what slipped away in another one-possession AFC East result. Patriots Bills Matchup Just Got More Complicated In The Secondary
The early weeks of the 2026 season have already tested New Englands depth, with A.J. Brown, Mike Onwenu, Christian Barmore and Christian Gonzalez all dealing with injuries. Now the Patriots are preparing for a divisional trip to Buffalo with another familiar layer of uncertainty in the secondary, even as the Bills are navigating some issues of their own on the back end.
Buffalo cornerback Christian Benford is unlikely to play, which adds another wrinkle to a matchup that already looked like it could turn on coverage and communication. For the Patriots, a game that might have been about establishing control in the AFC East now comes with more moving parts in the defensive backfields on both sides, and that could make Sunday feel a lot less predictable than it did a week ago.
