Patriots Have A TreVeyon Henderson Issue They Can't Easily Hide

Can the Patriots balance their explosive offense with TreVeyon Hendersons glaring pass protection issues?

The Patriots have a TreVeyon Henderson issue, and it showed up in the worst possible place: pass protection.

For New England, this is the kind of problem that can quietly reshape an offense. Henderson is still one of the team’s most dangerous players with the ball in his hands, giving the Patriots juice as both a runner and a receiver. But when the game gets into obvious passing downs, his struggles in protection are making it harder to keep him on the field.

Thursday night against the Chicago Bears put that issue in plain view.

“TreVeyon Henderson got an 8.6 grade in pass pro tonight. 8.6 out of 100.

Was also the worst graded Patriot on offense. Completely unplayable in passing situations. https://t.co/YoixTXvACs”

That’s the tension for New England: Henderson brings the kind of explosiveness the Patriots drafted him for, but that same value can disappear if he can’t be trusted to hold up in pass pro. If he’s not staying in to block, defenses can start treating his snaps like run tells.

That matters even more for an offense built around Drake Maye, especially with defenses already trying to heat up a Patriots offensive line dealing with injuries. If opponents know Henderson won’t be asked to protect on passing downs, they can sell out against the run and make life easier on the defense.

This hasn’t been limited to one night, either. Henderson has had trouble winning the coaching staff’s trust in the passing game, while Rhamondre Stevenson has stayed the more dependable option in those spots.

Of course, Stevenson brings his own problem: he can’t be on the field for everything. He is clearly the back New England trusts most in passing situations, but the Patriots also need Henderson’s burst to keep the offense from bogging down and becoming too easy to read.

That leaves Mike Vrabel and the Patriots stuck in the middle. If Henderson stays out there, the defense gets a clue. If he’s taken off the field on passing downs, New England becomes more predictable and leans even harder on Stevenson.

For now, there isn’t a clean answer. The Patriots need Henderson to become much more dependable as a pass blocker, because sitting one of their most explosive offensive players in obvious passing situations is not a long-term fix. Until that changes, New England is living with a real TreVeyon Henderson problem.

Vrabel Just Gave Patriots Fans More Reason To Believe In Drake Maye

Drake Mayes early-season growing pains were easy to see through the first three games, but the Patriots have watched the rookie settle in and start to steer the offense with far more confidence since then. His improved play has helped keep New England in games even as the defense has had its own issues, and the 4-3 start entering Week 8 has given the team a much better feel than it had in September.

Mike Vrabel added to that optimism after Mayes Week 7 performance, offering a public show of support for the young quarterback at a time when every encouraging sign matters. For a Patriots team still trying to sort out its identity, that kind of backing from the head coach matters almost as much as the progress on the field, especially with Maye giving the offense a reason to stay competitive every week. Mike Vrabel's Late Gamble Left Patriots With A Tough Result

Late in the fourth quarter, Mike Vrabel tried to squeeze out one more chance for New England by getting creative with the clock. The Patriots coach had defensive tackle Cory Durden jump offsides on a 3rd-and-1 play, a move designed to preserve time and keep the offense from bleeding away another snap while the game was slipping toward the Chicago Bears.

New England executed the tactic, but the margin for error vanished soon after. Chicago responded with a kick from Cairo Santos that turned the situation from a calculated gamble into a costly final sequence, and Vrabel later acknowledged both the strategy and the way the Patriots handled it even as the decisive field goal settled the result. Patriots Face A Brutal Test As Injuries Keep Piling Up

The Patriots head to Soldier Field on Thursday night with a chance to push their winning streak to four, but the trip comes with plenty of built-in difficulty. Chicago has been one of the leagues more complete early-season teams, ranking near the top in both yards per game and sacks, so this is already a demanding spot for a New England group trying to keep momentum rolling.

New Englands challenge is made even tougher by a long injury list that has thinned the roster in multiple places. Mike Onwenu, Greg Van Roten, Alijah Vera-Tucker, Reggie Gilliam, Romeo Doubs and Mack Hollins are on injured reserve, and Carlton Davis, Karon Prunty, Channing Canada and Ben Brown have been ruled out for Thursday night, leaving the Patriots to piece together both their lineup and their game plan on a short week.
