Fresh off a statement win over the Bills, the Patriots have put themselves in a spot where standing pat would feel like a missed opportunity.
New England’s latest surge has changed the conversation. Drake Maye is back to lighting it up, the defense has looked suffocating even with Christian Gonzalez and Christian Barmore injured, and the whole team appears to have found its rhythm again. With Maye still on a rookie contract, this is the moment to push.
The biggest immediate need is clear: receiver help. A.J.
Brown is out with injury, and Mack Hollins also went down on Sunday. That leaves the Patriots short on playmakers, especially on the outside, where they need someone who can handle “X” receiver duties while Brown and Hollins are unavailable.
There are a few different ways New England could go. A lower-level move for someone like Stefon Diggs would make sense. But the more aggressive route is the one that really changes the ceiling of the offense: a swing for Marvin Harrison Jr. or Brian Thomas Jr.
Both would bring upside, and both could give the Patriots a true outside threat right away. If one of them comes in at a reasonable draft cost, there’s a strong argument that New England should make the deal immediately. Either player could step in as the primary outside receiver until Brown returns, and once Brown is back, Josh McDaniels would have the kind of flexibility every offense wants - Brown back in the “X” role and another weapon he can move around the formation.
That’s the kind of roster move that fits where the Patriots are right now. They’ve already made a major addition by bringing Brown to Foxborough, but injuries have changed the equation, and the trade market is now part of the path forward.
Receiver isn’t the only spot worth monitoring, either. The Patriots could also use more help on the edge.
They do have pieces there. Rookie Gabe Jacas has flashed real impact, Dre’Mont Jones has been strong when healthy, and Elijah Ponder has shown he can contribute. But three players aren’t enough for a dependable edge room, especially with Jones already missing time due to injury.
That makes the trade market worth watching. K’Lavon Chaisson is one possibility, and a reunion would not appear to require a major price. But the name that stands out most is Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux.
He brings the kind of profile New England would love: former top-five pick, big-time size and athleticism, plus the burst off the line to become a real weapon in this defense. Put him alongside Milton Williams, Barmore, Jacas, and Jones, and the Patriots would have a front that could cause problems in a hurry. Add in Zak Kuhr’s play-calling, and the matchups could get even better.
The message is simple: New England should be aggressive. Whether it’s another receiver or an edge rusher, the Patriots have earned the right to go after more help. And if they want the best possible fit on defense, Thibodeaux looks like the name to circle.

Patriots Have A Gabe Jacas Opportunity They Can't Ignore
The Patriots pass rush has been thin enough to make every possible reinforcement worth a look, especially with losses and injuries already testing the depth chart. In that kind of spot, the idea of adding a veteran edge rusher like Khalil Mack from the Chargers carries obvious appeal for New England, not just for what he could still bring on the field, but for the kind of experience he could pass along in the room.
Gabe Jacas is part of why this conversation matters in the first place. The Patriots appear to have a young player whose game shares some traits with Macks, and pairing him with a proven pro could accelerate that development in a hurry. Whether New England decides the price is worth it remains the real question, but the fit is easy to see, and the need is hard to ignore. [Read more 🡒]
Patriots May Be Eyeing A Veteran Fix For Their Run Game
The Patriots are still looking for help in the backfield, and that search brought veteran free-agent running back Jamaal Williams to Foxborough for a workout. New England evaluated Williams along with other free agents as it continues to sort through possible depth options for an offense that could use more stability behind its top runners.
Williams brings eight NFL seasons of experience and a resume that includes a strong 2022 campaign with the Detroit Lions, which makes him the kind of established option teams often check on when they want insurance at running back. The Patriots have not signed him yet, but they have kept roster spots open for exactly this kind of addition, leaving the door open as they weigh whether a veteran presence fits their plans. Patriots Are Getting Early Proof They Made The Right WR Call
The Patriots spent the offseason reshaping their wide receiver room, bringing in A.J. Brown in a trade and signing Romeo Doubs while moving on from Stefon Diggs and dealing Kayshon Boutte. It was the kind of aggressive reset that can look smart on paper and awkward on the field early, especially after Brown landed on injured reserve and Doubs had a rough start before finding his footing over the last few games.
Romeo Doubs recent improvement has given New England at least a little early validation for how it handled the position, even if the full picture is still developing. Across the league, former Patriots target Michael Pittman Jr. has not exactly stormed out of the gate after being traded to the Steelers, with his production lagging behind the expectations that came with his extension, and that contrast only sharpens how much these receiver decisions matter for a team trying to get the room right.
