Carlton Davis Progresses in Concussion Protocol Ahead of AFC Title Clash
FOXBORO - The Patriots’ defense might be getting a key piece back just in time for the biggest game of the season.
Cornerback Carlton Davis was back on the practice field Wednesday, sporting a non-contact jersey - a clear sign he’s advancing through the NFL’s concussion protocol. While he’s not fully cleared yet, his presence is an encouraging development as New England prepares to face the Broncos in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game.
Davis was a late scratch in the Patriots’ divisional-round win over the Texans, but before exiting, he had already made a major impact. He came up with two of the team’s four interceptions in what was arguably the defense’s most complete performance of the year. The Patriots were flying around all game, racking up 14 pass breakups and three sacks - a disruptive, opportunistic showing that set the tone from start to finish.
Getting Davis back in the lineup would only strengthen a secondary that’s hitting its stride at the perfect time.
But while Davis’ return is trending in the right direction, the Patriots are still dealing with a handful of injury concerns elsewhere on the roster.
Tight end Hunter Henry, right tackle Morgan Moses, outside linebacker Harold Landry, inside linebacker Christian Elliss, and offensive lineman Thayer Munford Jr. all missed practice on Wednesday. It’s worth noting that each of those players has missed practice time in recent weeks but still managed to suit up on game day, so their status remains fluid heading into the weekend.
On a more positive note, rookie defensive tackle Joshua Farmer and running back Terrell Jennings were both back on the field. Farmer has been sidelined for several weeks on injured reserve, but his return to practice opens the door for a potential activation ahead of Sunday’s kickoff. Jennings, a depth piece in the backfield, could also be in line for a role depending on how the rest of the roster shakes out.
Wide receiver Mack Hollins remains on injured reserve with an abdominal injury and hasn’t played since the Patriots’ win in Baltimore on December 21. There’s been no indication yet that he’s close to returning.
As the Patriots continue to prepare for Denver, the health of key contributors like Davis, Henry, and Landry will be closely monitored. With a trip to the Super Bowl on the line, every snap - and every player - matters.
