Brenden Schooler is back on the practice field for the Patriots, and the timing of his return window could hardly be better lined up with the calendar.
The 2025 New England captain worked Wednesday after spending all of training camp on the non-football injury list. With the 53-man roster deadline already in the books back in August, the team has now opened the 21-day window for him to come off the list in late September, which is the earliest it can happen under the league’s updated rules.
Those rules allow players on the non-football injury list or physically unable to perform list to start practicing after the second week of the regular season. Actual activation still can’t come until after the fourth week, which puts a 1 p.m. ET meeting with the Las Vegas Raiders at Gillette Stadium in October in view.
For now, though, Schooler will miss road games against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills, with No. 41 staying out until at least that later point.
Schooler, 29, has played in 66 games since joining the Patriots as part of their 2022 undrafted class. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound former Oregon-to-Texas transfer first made his mark with PFWA All-Rookie honors on special teams, then piled up Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro recognition.
He signed a three-year extension in 2024 and was named a captain for the first time last season under special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer. A core special teams presence, Schooler has logged 1,433 snaps in that phase and another 93 on defense in a situational role. His career line includes 59 combined tackles, two sacks, four fumble recoveries, a blocked field goal and a blocked punt.
