Mike Vrabel walked into Patriots training camp expecting the usual football questions. Instead, he ended up with a tiny co-star stealing the spotlight.
The New England head coach arrived at his latest media availability with BB, a young German Shepherd puppy wearing a Patriots jersey, tucked under his arm. The scene immediately became one of camp’s most talked-about moments, and not just because fans thought it was adorable.
Online, plenty of Patriots supporters saw something else in it. Some accused Vrabel of using the puppy to steer attention away from the controversy that has followed him for months.
That skepticism traces back to allegations involving former NFL reporter Dianna Russini. Earlier this year, the New York Post published photos that appeared to show Vrabel spending time with Russini at an Arizona resort several years ago. Russini has repeatedly denied any romantic involvement or wrongdoing and has said she stands by her reporting.
Vrabel has never publicly admitted to having an affair. Still, before the NFL Draft in April, he said he had "failed" his family and apologized for becoming a distraction to the Patriots organization and its fans.
That history is why BB’s podium debut landed the way it did for some fans. One user said the Patriots’ public relations team was "working overtime" for Vrabel.
Another argued the puppy was meant to soften the mood, saying it helped "disarm the tension in the room" while shifting focus away from tougher questions. Others just went for the joke, including one fan who said Vrabel couldn’t possibly be questioned while holding a puppy.
The Patriots leaned into the moment, too, posting photos of BB with the caption, "A puppy at the podium."
All of it played out as training camp rolled on and the Patriots prepared for Vrabel’s second season leading the franchise. Earlier this month, owner Robert Kraft also publicly backed the reigning NFL Coach of the Year, saying he believes Vrabel is the right person to lead the organization despite the scrutiny around his personal life.
Whether BB was just a cute camp surprise or something fans read a little too deeply into, the puppy did what few things can: it grabbed nearly as much attention as the team itself.
