Atlanta signed Tagovailoa after Miami decided to move on from the quarterback it once hoped would be its franchise answer. Because of his contract, the Dolphins couldn’t trade him, so he was free to pick his next stop. He landed with the Falcons even though Michael Penix Jr. was already on the roster, setting up a real competition for the job.
That’s where the intrigue starts. At this point in the offseason, analysts are already leaning toward Tagovailoa winning the battle to become Atlanta’s starter, and a lot of that comes down to Penix Jr. still being viewed as shaky and unreliable. The Falcons are far from locked into anything, though, and they’ve left themselves with a situation that’s already drawing criticism before it becomes official.
Miami’s decision to release Tagovailoa came with dead money, but the bigger issue was the lack of a clear replacement plan. It was a risky move, and the Dolphins knew it. The Falcons are betting that the change of scenery can do for Tagovailoa what it did for other quarterbacks around the league, pointing to Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield as examples of players who eventually found better footing after rough starts with the teams that drafted them.
Tagovailoa will try to follow that same path in Atlanta, and the next few weeks may determine whether he can beat out Penix Jr. for the starting role. Given how things have gone so far, it may not take much for him to make that happen.
The Patriots, meanwhile, are watching this from a distance but not without reason. Tagovailoa’s departure from the AFC East wasn’t a major storyline for New England in the broader rivalry sense, but his record against the Patriots left its mark. Since 2020, he went 7-1 against them in the regular season, and that was enough to turn him into a familiar headache.
When the Dolphins had someone else under center, New England had far less to deal with. Tagovailoa quickly became Bill Belichick’s kryptonite, and even if he didn’t consistently dominate the rest of the league, he was always a problem for the Patriots.
His Falcons debut hasn’t exactly been a clean reset. He was embarrassed in the preseason opener by fumbling the first snap of the game, a rough start for a quarterback trying to rebuild his reputation. Still, what he showed against the Patriots is part of the reason the NFC South shouldn’t be too quick to write him off.
That doesn’t mean Tagovailoa is suddenly on a path to a playoff run or some huge quarterback renaissance in Atlanta. It does mean it’s too early to make a final call on what he can be for a new team. If he could consistently trouble a well-coached Patriots group, then the Falcons’ division rivals would be wise not to dismiss him too soon.
That much is clear: anything is possible, even for Tua.
