Mike Vrabel didn’t dress it up. With the Patriots buried by three scores in the third quarter against the Jaguars, he saw a chance to get Caleb Lomu on the field and took it.
Down 35-6 in the loss to Jacksonville, New England swapped out veteran right tackle Morgan Moses for the first-round pick. It was a rare look for Lomu, who had been used only sparingly before Sunday - four offensive snaps against the Steelers and none against the Seahawks.
“I just made a decision, you know what I mean?” Vrabel said.
“It’s a long season. Morgan is [35].
I don’t know what to tell you. I didn’t think we were going to come back and win the game, as much as I wished that we were, I didn’t think that we were.
So, I made a decision.”
Vrabel added that Moses’ job is not in danger, at least as far as he knows. He also said he hadn’t gotten a chance to study the tape yet, but the intent was simple: get Lomu more reps while the game was out of hand.
“I didn’t have a chance to watch the tape, but it was ‘let’s get Caleb some reps’. We were down however much we were down. That was just me making a decision.”
The move came with the Patriots’ offensive line already under stress. Starting right tackle Mike Onwenu is on injured reserve with a broken ankle, and reserve interior lineman Greg Van Roten left Saturday’s game early with a thigh injury before Walter Rouse stepped in.
Lomu has been in the mix at a few spots since camp. Vrabel said at different points over the summer that the Patriots had considered him at guard, and Lomu worked at both tackle spots and as a jumbo tight end during training camp. So far, though, the guard work has not been a major part of his load.
On Sunday, his snaps came at right tackle, filling in for Moses.
The Patriots, now losers of two of their first three games, head to Buffalo next week for a divisional matchup.
“I think it’s one day at a time, it’s what we can do to get healthy and improve as a football team,” Vrabel said. “That’s all we can do. It’s going to start with me and my ability to teach, my ability to get the guys in the right spots and then also have a practice plan that I feel gives us the best chance to be ready on Sunday.”
