Kayshon Boutte’s name has been floating around Patriots trade talk all offseason, and Mike Vrabel just made sure that conversation isn’t disappearing anytime soon.
For months, the buzz has pointed toward New England potentially moving the wide receiver before the final year of his rookie contract. That chatter picked up again once the trade for A.J. Brown became official, with the receiving group now expected to be led by Brown and free-agent addition Romeo Doubs.
And yet Boutte has done plenty to complicate the picture. Over the last two seasons, he’s become a real piece of the offense, and in 2025 he turned in some of the season’s most eye-catching catches, enough to put him on the radar around the league. He has also gotten better every year since the Patriots drafted him, which would normally make him feel like a player worth keeping.
Still, the feeling around the league has been that Boutte may be the odd man out in a crowded receiver room, especially because he appears to carry the most trade value. Based on what has happened at training camp, though, any move does not seem close. Boutte has been Drake Maye’s favorite target, even ahead of Brown.
Vrabel’s comments ahead of Monday’s walkthrough did little to shut the door on the speculation. He spoke about Boutte in glowing terms, but he never flatly said the receiver is off the block. That omission is exactly why some fans came away uneasy, since the praise could also be read as a way to boost Boutte’s value for any interested teams.

Boutte’s rise matters because he entered the league as a sixth-round pick in 2023, a spot that usually comes with low expectations. Instead, he has grown into the kind of player who can threaten defenses and give Maye a dependable option. That’s not easy to find, and it’s the kind of production the Patriots have been searching for for a long time.
At the same time, the business side is impossible to ignore. If New England doesn’t plan to extend him beyond the 2026 season, moving him now would at least bring back something before he can leave in free agency next spring. But that would also mean losing a receiver who has become important to Maye’s development.
So the story hangs there for now. Vrabel didn’t end the speculation, and he didn’t exactly pour cold water on it either. Until the Patriots make their intentions clear, Boutte’s future will keep hanging over training camp.
