Patriots Fans Have A New A.J. Brown Worry Before Week 8

As A.J. Brown's injury setbacks cast a shadow over his impact on the Patriots' offense, concerns arise over whether the star receiver can bounce back in time for pivotal matchups.

The Patriots’ A.J. Brown situation has taken another rough turn heading into Week 8, and this time the issue is no longer just the ankle that has already cost him time. According to Ian Rapoport, Brown was not spotted at practice on Thursday because of a knee problem that has flared up, leaving his status for Sunday’s game against the Dolphins in question.

That’s a frustrating development after a season that was supposed to see Brown settle in as the kind of difference-maker Patriots fans had been imagining since the offseason. Mike Vrabel’s connection to Brown fueled plenty of hope that New England could land him for a reasonable price, and once the trade happened in June, the buzz around what he could do for Drake Maye and the offense only grew.

But the on-field reality has been choppy from the start. Brown suffered a high ankle sprain in the Week 1 Super Bowl rematch against the Seahawks and missed the next four games before returning in Week 6 against the Jets. That comeback didn’t immediately spark the kind of impact the Patriots were banking on, and even after a better showing against the Bears last week, he still hasn’t looked like the clear WR1 the team expected.

Now the knee issue adds another layer of concern. Brown was limited at practice on Wednesday, then missed Thursday entirely, which makes his availability for Sunday far from certain.

There’s reason to be cautious, but not to slam the door shut on what Brown can still become in this offense. He set a new career-high in drops in one game, then followed that with an improved performance on a short week. The talent is still there, and the Patriots may simply be paying the price for pushing him back too soon.

The initial ankle injury usually takes 6-8 weeks to heal, and Brown was back after just four. That return may have been ahead of schedule, and if it played a role in the knee problem, the Patriots could be learning a hard lesson. Fast-tracking him doesn’t help anyone if it only sets the whole process back.

Even so, this doesn’t erase the possibility of Brown becoming the receiver they thought they were getting. He was only on the field with the team for a limited time in Week 1, and getting back from an ankle injury is never simple. With the knee now in the mix, the road is even messier, but once that’s sorted out, there’s still a chance he gets back to the level he showed in training camp, when he looked like a true WR1 with a real connection with Maye.

For now, though, it’s all trending in the wrong direction, and the Patriots may need to take a hard look at whether sitting him next week is the smarter move.

Patriots Just Got Another Week 8 Distraction From The NFL

Mike Vrabel has found himself in the middle of another league-side storyline just as the Patriots try to keep their focus on football. The NFL has been tightening its stance on coaches behavior toward officials, and Vrabel was among those caught up in the leagues push to curb sideline criticism during games, a reminder that the margins around the Patriots are not always confined to the field.

What makes this latest wrinkle especially annoying from New Englands perspective is the way it surfaced. The fine was not supposed to become a public talking point, but the details got out anyway, and Vrabel was reportedly unhappy about that part of it. For a team already trying to manage the noise around a crucial stretch, it is one more distraction the Patriots would rather not have hanging around. [Read more 🡒]

Patriots Cornerback Woes Could Reopen Door For A Familiar Return

The Patriots cornerback depth has been tested by injuries this season, with Carlton Davis III among the players sidelined by a neck issue and the secondary forced to absorb the ripple effects. In that kind of situation, teams often start looking for familiar options who already know the system, and Alex Austin has emerged as one of those names after a recent stint away from New England.

Austin, who spent time with the Patriots before being let go by Dallas, has already made it clear he would welcome a return, which gives this possibility a little more traction than a typical free-agent rumor. For now, nothing has been finalized, but with the Patriots still shuffling bodies in the back end, a reunion would make sense if the front office decides it needs another layer of insurance at cornerback. Patriots Suddenly Have A TreVeyon Henderson Decision Fans Didn't Expect

TreVeyon Hendersons place in the Patriots backfield has become a little murkier than anyone expected, with his role reportedly shrinking enough to spark outside chatter about what comes next. For a player the team viewed as part of its long-term plans, the sudden dip in usage has raised eyebrows, especially with New England still sorting out how it wants to distribute work in the run game.

The speculation has only grown because Henderson is still on a rookie deal, which makes him more than just a short-term depth piece in the eyes of the front office. Even with his reduced role and injury status in the mix, the Patriots have not exactly signaled they are eager to move on, so any real conversation would likely hinge on whether another team is willing to make a strong enough offer to get their attention.
