As the Patriots wrap up their final preparations for the 2026 season, the conversation around New England is split between caution and optimism. Some prognosticators are bracing for a downturn because of a much tougher schedule. Others still see a team with enough juice to keep things rolling.
The biggest reason for that confidence is simple: Drake Maye. If the star quarterback is healthy again, the Patriots are the kind of team that can stay in the fight in just about any game.
That’s the backdrop for Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon, who recently ranked NFL fanbases by their “panic meter” heading into 2026. For Patriots fans, he kept it low at 2 out of 10.

There will be some panic if they take a massive step in the wrong direction after a surprise Super Bowl run, but the young core is locked in and the fans can certainly handle a less-than-awesome campaign.”
A trip back to the playoffs matters here. Missing them in 2026 would sting, especially after that surprise Super Bowl run. But how badly it lands would depend on how far the Patriots fall from their 2025 mark of 14-3.
There’s a big difference between a disappointing season and a true collapse. Falling short of the postseason would be a letdown. Dropping well below .500 would be something else entirely.
The AFC East also gives New England some room to avoid a total free fall. The Miami Dolphins and New York Jets are still there, and that helps keep the floor from dropping too far. The bigger obstacle, as always, is Buffalo.
With Josh Allen leading the Bills, the Patriots know every meeting is a test. Any win over Buffalo carries weight. Taking the division from them again would be a huge statement.
Mike Vrabel, meanwhile, is aiming for a second straight AFC East crown and isn’t giving away anything, Buffalo or not. He also has the one thing every contender needs: a quarterback who can tilt games.
That’s where Maye changes everything. Stellar quarterback play is the NFL’s great equalizer, and Maye gives New England that edge. He’s an accurate passer, and when plays break down, he can escape pressure and make defenders pay with his scrambling.
The Bills still have Josh Allen. The Patriots, though, have a maturing Drake Maye. And that’s why, even with questions swirling around 2026, the panic level in Foxborough remains low.

With Terrell Jennings and Lan Larison dealing with injuries and Jam Miller no longer in the mix, the Patriots had a clear need to add some depth to their backfield. They answered it by sending a 2028 seventh-round pick to Arizona for running back Corey Kiner, a move that gives the roster another option behind the top two runners and helps stabilize a position that had been thinned out quickly.
Kiner arrives with a reputation as a versatile back, the kind of player who can give New England something useful in multiple situations if he settles in quickly. The Patriots went into camp expecting Rhamondre Stevenson to head the backfield and TreVeyon Henderson to give the offense a different kind of burst, but the plan has gotten a little shakier as the opener approaches. Stevenson remains positioned as the lead back, while Corey Kiner also sits in the mix, and Hendersons status has become the part of the equation worth watching most closely.
Henderson is working back from an ankle injury he suffered late in training camp, and while he has been around team activities, his return timetable is still not clear. The Patriots filled out most of their initial practice squad with a dozen additions, but they still left five spots open as roster-building after cutdown day continues to take shape. An International Pathway Player joined the group without counting against the 16-man limit, while veteran punter Mitch Wishnowsky landed on the practice squad after Bryce Baringer was placed on injured reserve.
