Efton Chism’s rise in New England has already pulled him into a familiar Patriots conversation, but the cleaner comp might not be Julian Edelman.
Chism became a bigger name beyond Foxborough after his one-handed catch helped the Patriots beat the Bills in Week 4, yet plenty of fans had already latched onto him when he arrived as an undrafted free agent and turned heads in rookie training camp. Once he showed up in practice wearing No. 11 to help simulate Jaxson Smith-Njigba ahead of the season opener, the Edelman comparisons really took off. Edelman even noticed, reacting to a clip of Chism in the jersey with an eyes emoji.
Still, Patriots insider Tom E. Curran said the better model for Chism might be Danny Amendola.
“Julian, you know, he was pretty rocked up. You would never have seen, if Efton Chism was the quarterback at Kent State, the number of unbelievable highlight plays that Julian Edelman had, because of his power in addition to his elusiveness,” Curran said.
“But, can he be Danny Amendola? That was who the Patriots and Josh McDaniels asked him to study last summer when he was with the team.
“They said: ‘This is the guy that you want to try to emulate’. Amendola’s a bit more slight than Edelman, but unbelievable athlete. I mean, Danny Amendola could levitate, just go up and get the ball, and that’s what Chism did.”
Amendola wasn’t as electric as Edelman and didn’t produce quite as much in New England, but he carved out a memorable Patriots run anyway. He delivered in the playoffs and came through with big plays when the team needed them, the same kind of value Chism showed against Buffalo.
Chism still has a good connection with Edelman, though. The former Super Bowl MVP brought him onto a television appearance and joked with him about what it was like catching a touchdown pass as an “elevated player.”
Chism is - now famously - not a practice squad player, despite C.J. Gardner-Johnson’s comments about it.
“Why do you think they compare us?” Edelman asked Chism.
“Probably just the way we look,” Chism replied with a chuckle.
Edelman told him the comparisons are part of the deal, just as they were for him when he entered New England while Wes Welker was still starring there.
“Welcome to the club, Bubs,” Edelman told Chism. “When I first joined the team, everybody used to call me ‘Baby Wes’ even though I was about three inches taller and 20 pounds heavier. It’s crazy.”
With the Patriots’ receiver group banged up, Chism looks set to have a role Sunday against the Raiders. A.J. Brown remains on injured reserve for at least one more week, and Mack Hollins will miss Week 5 with a calf injury.
Curran believes that role could grow.
“I would not rule out Efton Chism being a player who can be a 35 to 45 catch guy in the NFL,” Curran said. “He’s not gonna be Edelman who had about 110, but I do think there is absolutely a role for him.”

A.J. Brown Looks More Right Than Ever About Leaving Eagles
A.J. Browns move from Philadelphia to New England was framed at the time as the end of a relationship that had gone sour, with whispers about friction with Jalen Hurts and a locker room that no longer felt as connected as it should. From the Patriots side, the deal brought in a proven receiver with a big-game rsum, but it also left behind a team in Philadelphia that suddenly had to explain why one of its best offensive weapons was no longer there.
Since then, the Eagles have had trouble looking like the same offense, and the broader picture around the roster has only gotten shakier. The departures up front and the visible tension surrounding the team have made Browns exit feel even more significant in hindsight, especially with Philadelphia now trying to steady itself while questions keep piling up about where the season is headed. Mike Vrabel Scandal Just Took Another Turn Patriots Fans Will Notice
The fallout from the photos involving Dianna Russini and Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel is still working its way through the NFL media world, and Russini is now taking a more deliberate approach to what comes next. After resigning from The Athletic, she has been weighing offers to return to NFL coverage, a reminder that the story has moved beyond the initial buzz and into questions about how she rebuilds her career.
Russini has reportedly hired crisis PR expert Melissa Nathan to help manage that process, another sign of how much attention the controversy has drawn. Vrabel remains in place as New Englands coach and has apologized, but has not admitted to any affair, leaving the episode hanging over both his standing with Patriots fans and Russinis next move. Patriots Injuries Could Force Josh McDaniels Into A Raiders Test
Mike Vrabel still sounded steady after the Patriots recent loss, but the injury picture around the offense has made the week a little more complicated. Ahead of the matchup with the Raiders, New England was already dealing with key absences on the practice field, and the timing matters because Josh McDaniels has a familiar opponent on deck and a short window to sort out how much he can ask of an offense that has been forced to adapt.
The Patriots have been productive enough on the ground to rank 10th in rushing yards this season, and Las Vegas has not exactly been stout against the run, so the path forward may be clear even if the personnel is not. With the receiving group and backfield both in flux, McDaniels could lean even more heavily into the run, leaving the Patriots to see how far a ground-based plan can carry them if the injuries linger into game day.
