The Chargers may be finding out fast why Cole Strange was available in the first place.
Strange, the former Patriots first-round pick, came into Los Angeles with some built-in familiarity after following Mike McDaniel from Miami earlier this year. That connection helped land him a two-year deal, and the expectation was straightforward: he’d be the immediate starter at center.
Instead, his preseason showing against the 49ers on Friday night is already drawing attention for the wrong reasons.
Strange’s play has quickly become a talking point around the Chargers, with clips of his performance circulating on social media and fans calling for the team to move on from him at the top of the depth chart. The latest noise only adds to a career that has already produced plenty of unwanted viral moments.
That was part of the story in New England, too. Bill Belichick spent a first-round pick on Strange with the 29th overall selection, a move that drew a famously amused reaction from Sean McVay when the Rams coach heard the pick. Strange spent three years with the Patriots before being released during roster cuts last summer.
He then bounced to the Browns’ practice squad, spent the 2025 season with the Dolphins, and now finds himself trying to settle in with the Chargers. The issue is that his latest audition does not look like one that will secure the job for long.
Strange has shown flashes of being a usable starter, including stretches with the Patriots, and his ability to move around the offensive line still gives him some value when teams need emergency help. But the bigger picture has followed him everywhere: teams keep giving him a look, and then backing away.
The Patriots moved on despite their need for line depth. The Dolphins kept him for one season, and he started every game he played there. Now the Chargers are the latest team to test whether he can hold down a starting role.
Right now, the early answer in Los Angeles does not look encouraging.
