A single heart emoji was enough to get Patriots fans spinning.
Kayshon Boutte, now with the Texans after the pre-2026 season trade, dropped that reaction on Drake Maye’s Instagram post celebrating New England’s upset win over the Bills in Buffalo last Sunday. For a fan base already watching the receiver situation in Foxborough unfold with frustration, it landed like a little blast from an alternate timeline.
And the timing only sharpened the reaction. The Patriots have been dealing with A.J.
Brown’s injury and the hole it opened in the offense, while Romeo Doubs has been on a slow climb after a rough start to his Patriots run. The rest of the receiver group has had trouble separating and making plays, which was one of Boutte’s strengths when he was still in New England.
So when Boutte showed up in Maye’s comments, Patriots fans did what they do: they noticed, they screenshotted, and they started imagining what this offense might look like if he were still around.
Imma cry bro 💔

The on-field part of the story in Houston hasn’t helped quiet the chatter. Boutte has played four games for the Texans and has 9 catches for 115 yards. That’s not a huge jump off the page, but it’s also not the kind of early-season production that makes New England’s decision feel easier to swallow.
Boutte’s role last year had already grown, and with a career-high 589 receiving yards in a season, he had shown enough to make it easy for Patriots fans to wonder what he would have done with a bigger piece of the offense now. Mike Vrabel suggested the move made sense because Boutte might have been a healthy scratch early in the year with the receiver room so crowded. But that idea doesn’t exactly square with how the season has played out around him.
Boutte had become too useful to leave on the sideline, especially with someone like Efton Chism, who hadn’t done much in regular-season action until this past week.
The Texans are 0-4 entering Week 5, and CJ Stroud hasn’t leaned on Boutte much in the passing game. Put that together, and it’s not hard to see why the receiver’s heart emoji felt like more than a throwaway comment.
There was already a little smoke before the trade, too. Reports said Boutte had requested one ahead of this year’s draft. But the early returns in Houston suggest the grass hasn’t been greener, and Patriots fans are feeling that from the other side as well.
With Brown sidelined in Week 1 because of an ankle sprain, Maye could have used Boutte right away. Instead, New England is left to wonder what the offense might have looked like with him still in the mix, and the front office’s choice to move him to an AFC contender is now part of the season’s growing list of what-ifs.

Patriots Have A Gabe Jacas Opportunity They Can't Ignore
The Patriots pass rush has been thin enough to make every possible reinforcement worth a look, especially with losses and injuries already testing the depth chart. In that kind of spot, the idea of adding a veteran edge rusher like Khalil Mack from the Chargers carries obvious appeal for New England, not just for what he could still bring on the field, but for the kind of experience he could pass along in the room.
Gabe Jacas is part of why this conversation matters in the first place. The Patriots appear to have a young player whose game shares some traits with Macks, and pairing him with a proven pro could accelerate that development in a hurry. Whether New England decides the price is worth it remains the real question, but the fit is easy to see, and the need is hard to ignore. [Read more 🡒]
Patriots May Be Eyeing A Veteran Fix For Their Run Game
The Patriots are still looking for help in the backfield, and that search brought veteran free-agent running back Jamaal Williams to Foxborough for a workout. New England evaluated Williams along with other free agents as it continues to sort through possible depth options for an offense that could use more stability behind its top runners.
Williams brings eight NFL seasons of experience and a resume that includes a strong 2022 campaign with the Detroit Lions, which makes him the kind of established option teams often check on when they want insurance at running back. The Patriots have not signed him yet, but they have kept roster spots open for exactly this kind of addition, leaving the door open as they weigh whether a veteran presence fits their plans. Patriots Are Getting Early Proof They Made The Right WR Call
The Patriots spent the offseason reshaping their wide receiver room, bringing in A.J. Brown in a trade and signing Romeo Doubs while moving on from Stefon Diggs and dealing Kayshon Boutte. It was the kind of aggressive reset that can look smart on paper and awkward on the field early, especially after Brown landed on injured reserve and Doubs had a rough start before finding his footing over the last few games.
Romeo Doubs recent improvement has given New England at least a little early validation for how it handled the position, even if the full picture is still developing. Across the league, former Patriots target Michael Pittman Jr. has not exactly stormed out of the gate after being traded to the Steelers, with his production lagging behind the expectations that came with his extension, and that contrast only sharpens how much these receiver decisions matter for a team trying to get the room right.
