The Patriots are walking into a matchup that could turn ugly in a hurry if they lose track of the ball over their heads.
Green Bay’s offense hasn’t been flawless this season - it ranks 20th in points at 21.4 per game, 18th in yards at 331.6, and 17th in expected points added per play at 0.010. But when the Packers decide to attack downfield, they’ve been as dangerous as anyone in football. No team has produced more explosive passing plays than Green Bay, which already has 33 completions of 20 or more yards.
Jordan Love has been right in the middle of it. He’s tied for the league lead with 17 completions of 20-plus air yards and is tied for third in average depth of target at 9.8. The Patriots know the challenge that brings.
“This team lives off of taking shots,” said safety Kevin Byard. “They’re an explosive-play team, a vertical-passing team.
So, this will be a huge challenge for us as a defense. Obviously trying to be sticky in coverage, but also when we are playing zone, making sure we’re getting back in our zones, making sure we’re actually forcing those checkdowns.
And sometimes I think in this game we’re going to have to accept the four- or five-yard checkdowns and not allowing the ball to get thrown over our head.”
That warning lands with extra weight because New England has already had trouble limiting big gains through the air. Through eight games, the Patriots have given up 25 explosive passing plays, which ranks 10th-worst in the league.
Green Bay’s ability to stretch defenses has been fueled heavily by Christian Watson and Matthew Golden. Watson leads the Packers with 708 receiving yards and six touchdowns on 42 catches, while averaging 16.9 yards per reception.
Golden has 43 catches for 619 yards and four touchdowns, and he’s averaging 14.4 yards per catch. The two receivers have accounted for 54 of Green Bay’s 97 passing first downs.
“These receivers are explosive, especially Watson and Golden. That’s a nasty duo there about taking the top off,” said defensive coordinator Zak Kuhr.
Byard was just as direct about what makes Watson such a problem.
“Christian Watson may be the fastest receiver in the league; he’s always a big play threat anytime he touches the ball,” added Byard. “But also Matthew Golden - he is a second-year player - has a lot of juice.
He’s building a really good rapport. I know he’s dropped some passes and stuff like that, but he’s getting open.
He’s creating separation.”
Those drops have been part of the story for Green Bay, too. Golden leads the league with nine, and Packers pass catchers have dropped 23 balls overall. Even with that, the numbers suggest the deep-ball damage could be even bigger than it has been.
Love’s role in all of it hasn’t gone unnoticed inside the Patriots’ building.
“I think he’s one of the most underrated quarterbacks in this league,” said Byard about Jordan Love. “He doesn’t get put into the top-10 lists sometimes, but he’s very efficient.
He’s leading the league in passing yards right now. He’s having a career year.
A lot of it is because of those deep ball shots.”
Kuhr said the Packers aren’t a one-note passing attack, either. They can work methodically, but the explosives are always there waiting.
“He hunts explosives,” said Kuhr. “They can meticulously drive down the field and sometimes that’s what it’s got to be, but we have to try to limit those 20-plus-yard plays, and they are really good at it.
He’s really good at it. He throws a great deep ball.
… We have to do our best to try to defend that in more than just one way. We can’t just be, ‘Hey, we’re going to pressure him and make it get off quick, and we’re not covering as long.‘
And it’s also, ‘Hey, we can’t just sit back forever.‘ We have to be able to mix it up a little bit.”

Tom Brady Had The Perfect Reaction To Gronk And Edelmans Latest Bit
Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman are back together in a familiar lane, this time using Fox Sports new digital series, The Gronk & Jules Show, to mix football talk with a little bit of personality. The project includes a song called Talkin Football, and the former Patriots teammates are leaning into the kind of easy chemistry that made them such a staple in New England for years.
Tom Brady noticed, too, and he had the sort of lighthearted reaction that fits the whole thing. He reposted the video with a joking comment, giving the series an extra boost from one of the most recognizable names in franchise history, while Gronk and Edelman continue building out a show that will feature conversations with players, coaches and insiders. Patriots Fans Have A Few Week 9 Results To Watch Closely
With the Patriots still trying to sort out their place in the AFC race, Week 9 brings a few scoreboard-watching opportunities that could matter almost as much as what happens in Foxborough. The schedule includes matchups like the Jaguars at the Ravens and the Jets at the Chiefs, and both games carry ripple effects for New England as the playoff picture starts to take shape.
Baltimore is one of the more interesting teams to track because of the way its quarterback situation has developed, while New Yorks trip to Kansas City is another one Patriots fans will have an eye on for reasons beyond simple rivalry. Patriots Suddenly Face A Running Back Decision They Didn't Expect
TreVeyon Hendersons availability has suddenly become a major Patriots storyline after a medical emergency sent the rookie running back to the hospital and left his return date unclear. For a team that had been counting on him as part of its backfield plans, the situation has quickly turned from a football issue into a broader roster concern, with New England now having to think through how it handles the position if the uncertainty lingers.
With the trade deadline approaching, the Patriots are at least being mentioned in the kind of running back speculation that usually surfaces only when a team feels pressed to act. The names being floated around the league are the sort that would reshape a backfield in a hurry, but for now it is still just that, speculation, as New England waits for more clarity on Henderson and weighs whether outside help becomes necessary.
