Mike Vrabel isn’t pretending Christian Gonzalez’s contract situation is just another item on the preseason to-do list.
With the New England Patriots still working toward a resolution for their star cornerback before the NFL season opens, Vrabel said Saturday that he wants to help get the matter settled - even if there’s a clear boundary he won’t cross. He’s willing to be part of the effort, but not the actual bargaining.
“I don’t get involved in the negotiations, per se, but I certainly want to be involved in trying to get the situation resolved,” Vrabel said.
That’s the balance point for New England right now. Vrabel has been around enough of these situations to know the difference between supporting the player and stepping into the front office’s lane. He also made it clear he wants to stay connected with players the organization sees as central to its future.
The Gonzalez situation has been hanging over the Patriots for months, and it still hasn’t been solved with Week 1 closing in. The 24-year-old cornerback remains under contract, but he has not committed to playing in the opener against Seattle without a new extension.
