The New England Patriots are making waves post-Super Bowl, and the focus is squarely on defensive pressure. Mike Vrabel and his crew are zeroing in on this crucial element, and with Zak Kuhr's promotion to defensive coordinator, the team is doubling down on what worked so well during their unexpected AFC playoff surge.
Kuhr's knack for dialing up pressure on quarterbacks like Justin Herbert and C.J. Stroud was a game-changer, and now he's officially at the helm of the defense.
Even more impressive was how the Patriots managed without their top edge rusher, Harold Landry III, who was limited to just 51 snaps over four playoff games, including the Super Bowl. The interior trio of Milton Williams, Christian Barmore, and Cory Durden stepped up big time, filling the gap and allowing K’Lavon Chaisson to shine on the edge. Anfernee Jennings also made his mark, transitioning from a special teams role to a key defensive player in the playoffs.
However, as the NFL's new league year approaches, the Patriots can't ignore their need for depth at edge rusher. Chaisson, who had a standout playoff run, is a free agent they’re eager to retain. Jennings is entering a pivotal contract year, and Landry, despite a strong start in 2025, struggled with injuries and is now hitting 30.
While the Patriots have long focused on bolstering their offensive line and wide receiver corps, edge rusher might just take center stage this offseason. NFL analyst Ben Solak points out that this is a prime year to address edge needs, with a wealth of talent available both in free agency and the draft.
Solak highlights a diverse pool of free-agent edge rushers, including Trey Hendrickson, Odafe Oweh, and Khalil Mack, among others. Each brings something unique to the table, whether it’s speed, run-stopping ability, or untapped potential.
Chaisson, in particular, stands out. At 26, he’s proven his worth in New England's system, excelling in multiple roles.
An extension seems likely, potentially wrapping up before the league's legal tampering period. Ideally, the Patriots aim to re-sign Chaisson, draft additional edge talent, and maximize Landry’s contributions for another season.
Vrabel's ability to extract maximum performance from his defensive line was evident during the Patriots’ 2025 campaign. Now, with the offseason in full swing, it's time to construct a front seven that can dominate right from the start of the new season.
