Patriots Eye Dolphins Star's Exit as Key Move Looms

As the Patriots eye another division title, all eyes are on Miami's decision about star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick amidst trade talks and roster changes.

While the New England Patriots' season didn't end with a Super Bowl celebration, there's plenty for fans to cheer about, especially clinching the AFC East title for the first time since 2019. It’s a sweet spot to be in, but maintaining that top spot won’t come easy. The road could get a bit smoother if the Miami Dolphins decide to part ways with their star safety, Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Miami's been busy shaking things up under their new leadership. They’ve already said goodbye to wide receiver Tyreek Hill and linebacker Bradley Chubb, and rumors are swirling about Fitzpatrick being the next to potentially leave. If these trade talks materialize, Patriots fans might just breathe a little easier.

Fitzpatrick has been a standout since his NFL debut in 2018. With 690 tackles, 21 interceptions, 60 pass deflections, and six forced fumbles over 120 games, his presence on the field is undeniable.

Even in a season where the Dolphins struggled, Fitzpatrick shone with 82 tackles, an interception, and a sack. As he approaches 30, he’s still proving to be a top-tier safety with plenty left in the tank.

The Dolphins, however, seem committed to a rebuild. With first-year GM Jon-Eric Sullivan and head coach Jeff Hafley at the helm, they're likely to keep reshaping the roster.

Unlike Hill or Chubb, Fitzpatrick could fetch significant draft picks, given the demand for skilled players in the secondary. Yet, with him in the final year of a hefty four-year, $73.6 million contract, teams will weigh their offers carefully.

No matter what Miami gets in return, Patriots fans are likely smiling at the current state of their division rivals. Since Tom Brady's departure, Miami had been a thorn in New England's side. But last season, the Patriots turned the tide, securing their first win in Miami since 2019 and sweeping the Dolphins for the first time since 2017.

With a tougher schedule ahead in 2026, the potential departure of Fitzpatrick and others from Miami could be a welcome relief for New England. If the Dolphins decide to trade Fitzpatrick out of the conference, it might just be the break the Patriots need to keep their momentum going in the AFC.
