Patriots Eye A.J. Brown But First-Round Price Sparks Debate

Weighing the potential trade for A.J. Brown, the Patriots must consider if a first-round pick is too steep an investment for the Eagles' star wide receiver.

The New England Patriots are eyeing a potential upgrade to their wide receiver corps this spring, and Philadelphia Eagles standout A.J. Brown is a name that’s generating buzz.

Brown, a proven talent, has had a rocky season in Philadelphia, expressing frustration with his role and even calling it a "s--tshow" during a live stream. His playoff performance against the 49ers was marred by crucial drops and a sideline spat with head coach Nick Sirianni.

Despite being a three-time Pro Bowler, Brown's numbers have dipped over the past three years. He snagged 78 of 121 targets for 1,003 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games, battling a nagging hamstring injury that seemed to sap some of his trademark explosiveness.

For the Patriots, adding Brown would instantly elevate their receiving options, giving rookie quarterback Drake Maye a top-tier target. However, the cost of acquiring Brown is a big question mark.

Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston weighed in, saying, "If the Eagles demand a first-round pick for A.J. Brown, that’s a steep price.

He’s still commanding a hefty salary and hasn’t quite looked like his old self. In a new environment, with a coach and quarterback he gels with, we might see a rejuvenated player.

But right now, a first-rounder seems too much."

Financially, a trade is complex for the Eagles. Moving Brown before June 1 would saddle them with a cap hit exceeding $40 million. Post-June 1, the hit is more manageable, but by then, the Patriots might have already addressed their needs.

Trading for Brown seems like a long shot given the financial implications and timing. The Patriots can’t afford to wait until June to bolster their receiving unit.

Luckily, New England has other intriguing options. Free agents like Alec Pierce, Mike Evans, and Jauan Jennings are on the radar, along with potential trade targets like Brian Thomas Jr. and Jordan Addison.

With NFL free agency kicking off on March 11 at 4 p.m. ET, the Patriots have plenty of opportunities to make a splash and support their young quarterback.
