The Patriots have a chance to get above .500 for the first time this season on Sunday afternoon, and the matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars comes with a handful of players who could swing it either way.
New England opened the year with a narrow loss to the Seattle Seahawks, then answered with a 20-3 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 2. That up-and-down start sets the stage for a Week 3 test that will hinge on a few key names on both sides of the ball.
Drake Maye is at the top of the list, and for good reason. After finishing as the MVP runner-up in 2025, the third-year quarterback has had a rough start to this season, throwing four interceptions in his first two games.
That total is tied for the most in the NFL, and New England’s offense has managed only two touchdowns so far. Maye said after last week’s win, "I think you are figuring us as an offense out early in the weeks, and when you are playing against teams early in the weeks, you are figuring out what we have got, who we are," Maye said after last week's win regarding the offensive struggles.
"I think it is just a nature of doing things at a higher level, executing better. Extra effort.
We talked about this week, extra effort, extra execution, and I think things when we did, it showed up." The question now is simple: can he put together four straight quarters of clean football?
On the edge, the Patriots will need another strong showing from Will Campbell. After a shaky playoff stretch last year, the 22-year-old has started 2026 in much better form.
Through two games, he has allowed one sack and only three pressures, and PFF has him seventh among qualified tackles in pass-blocking grade. Campbell said Wednesday, "I feel good," Campbell said Wednesday.
"Just excited to keep getting out there, keep improving. Just excited to keep winning."
That assignment gets tougher this week, with Jaguars edge rusher Joshua Hines-Allen waiting on the other side.
The Patriots also expect a boost on defense with Christian Gonzalez set to return. He missed last week’s game against the Steelers, but he carries no injury designation heading into Sunday.
Gonzalez said Friday, "It wasn't too serious," Davis said Friday regarding his injury. "It was just something I had to deal with and get back to my normal self and make that I'm able to do my job.
So that was the biggest thing and I'm good to go now." His return matters because Jacksonville doesn’t lean on just one receiver.
Parker Washington, Brian Thomas Jr. and Jakobi Meyers all give the Jaguars depth at wideout, and Gonzalez will be asked to help limit that group’s impact.
Another player worth watching is Elijah Ponder, who stepped up after Dre'Mont Jones left last week’s game early with a shoulder injury. The 2025 undrafted free agent finished the Steelers game with three tackles, a sack and a scoop-and-score touchdown.
Vrabel said of the fumble recovery, "He had a couple of them last year," Vrabel said regarding the fumble recovery. "I know the ball found him a couple times last year, and he would start running, or he had the one in Denver that they blew dead.
But it's good that good things happen when you're around the football." With Jones ruled out against Jacksonville, Ponder could again be in position to make life uncomfortable for Trevor Lawrence.
Then there’s Rhamondre Stevenson, whose ball security remains a major storyline. The veteran running back has long been a fixture in the Patriots’ offense, but last week again exposed the same problem that has followed him: turnovers.
He lost three fumbles in 2025 and put the ball on the ground again against Pittsburgh. Vrabel said of Stevenson, "It was good to see Rhamondre come back in there and have a couple really nice runs and break through a couple times," Vrabel said regarding Stevenson's performance against Pittsburgh.
"So, I think we're going to need everybody, and we know how critical the ball is and ball security, and we're going to need everybody." With TreVeyon Henderson also in the mix, Stevenson’s workload and role will be something to watch closely.
Sunday gives the Patriots a chance to build on Week 2, but the outcome may come down to whether these five players deliver when it matters most.
