The Steelers’ offense has already spent one week trying to find its footing, and now it may have to do so without one of its newest and most important pieces.
Michael Pittman Jr. has quickly become a central part of Pittsburgh’s attack after arriving from the Indianapolis Colts in March and signing a two-year, $35 million extension. He led the Steelers in receiving in Week 1 with 58 yards in their 20-13 win over the Atlanta Falcons, a game in which Aaron Rodgers stayed clean but the offense never quite found a rhythm.
That uncertainty has only grown heading into Week 2 against the New England Patriots. Pittman was limited in Wednesday’s practice because of a foot injury, did not practice on Thursday, and was not seen during the portion of Friday’s practice open to the media.

For a team already working through the early growing pains of a revamped offensive unit and a new head coach in Mike McCarthy, Pittman’s absence would be a real hit. He was brought in to be more than just another option; he’s a big-bodied target who gives Rodgers a reliable window on contested throws and over the middle. At 6-foot-4, he can shield defenders and win with size, and Pittsburgh leaned on that immediately in Week 1.
That makes the timing especially awkward. The Steelers’ passing game was uneven against Atlanta, and losing Pittman would place even more on DK Metcalf, who had a costly drop in the opener.
If Pittman can’t play, Rodgers will have to lean on other targets to get the job done against a Patriots defense that won’t make things easy. Pittman’s status, then, is more than a small injury note.
It could shape how Pittsburgh approaches a game it already needs to clean up.
