The Bills already know where their biggest problem lived last season, and it was right up front. Buffalo’s defense finished solid overall, but the run defense was a mess, and that left Josh Allen carrying too much of the load. Now there’s a new possibility on the table: a move for Vita Vea that could change the whole look of the AFC East.
New England has reason to pay attention. The Patriots reclaimed the AFC East crown in 2025 and went 5-1 in the division, with their lone loss coming at home against Buffalo. But if the Bills land a difference-maker in the middle, the balance in the division could tilt fast.
Buffalo’s defensive numbers tell the story. The unit ranked 12th overall, but against the run it fell all the way to 28th.
The Bills were one of five teams that gave up more than 135 rushing yards per game, and on the road they were even worse, allowing just under 150 rushing yards a game to rank 31st. That kind of production put real pressure on Allen and the offense to keep bailing them out.
The issues got louder when Daquan Jones missed time. Rookie Deone Walker flashed as an inside option, but Jones being out for five games, plus Ed Oliver appearing in only three regular-season games, left the front vulnerable.
In Buffalo’s four losses, two games featured a single runner going for 170 or more rushing yards: Bijan Robinson in Week 6 and De’Von Achane in Week 10. The Patriots also did damage on the ground in Week 15, even though Buffalo won the game, with TreVeyon Henderson piling up 148 rushing yards after New England had led 24-7 at halftime.
Robinson won’t be on the schedule for Buffalo this season, but Achane and Henderson both will be, twice.
That’s why Chris Landers of FanSided floated the idea of Buffalo going after Vea. The 31-year-old nose tackle weighs 347 pounds, is a Super Bowl Champion, and has made two Pro Bowls. He’s also holding out for a new contract, which makes him a real trade possibility.
Landers pointed to Allen’s prime as the reason the Bills should push in now, suggesting a second-round pick could be enough to get Tampa Bay to listen. A first-rounder feels less likely given Vea’s age and contract situation. Buffalo is expected to have a pick near the end of the second round, though that could mean adding a sweetener if another team is willing to match the basic offer.
Vea would bring more than bulk to the Bills’ front. Even with his size, he’s averaged just shy of six sacks over the last four seasons, and with Jones gone and Bradley Chubb added, Joe Brady’s staff could lean into heavier defensive fronts.
Buffalo has already been building the line with young talent, drafting T.J. Sanders, DeWayne Carter, and Zane Durant over the last three drafts. Add Vea to Ed Oliver on the interior, then mix in Walker, Chubb, and Gregory Rousseau, and the Bills could be looking at one of the deepest and most dangerous defensive lines in the league in 2026.
For New England and the rest of the AFC, that would be a problem.
