Patriots Block Tush Push Ban: NFL's Controversial Move Stirs Debate

Despite controversy and a strong push for change, the NFL is likely to keep the tush push tactic intact through 2026.

The NFL's decision to keep the "tush push" in play for another season is making waves across the league. This offensive maneuver, which has become a staple for teams like the New England Patriots, involves players lining up behind the quarterback to give him a literal push forward in short-yardage situations. It's a tactic that has sparked debate, especially after the Philadelphia Eagles brought it into the limelight during their Super Bowl LIX run in 2025.

The controversy hit a peak when the Green Bay Packers proposed a ban on the play following that Super Bowl. However, the Patriots, among others, successfully voted to keep it legal. The pushback against banning this style of quarterback sneak didn't gain enough traction to see any changes before last season kicked off.

According to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Rich McKay, co-chairman of the NFL competition committee, isn’t expecting any moves to ban the "tush push" in the 2026 season. This means teams will continue to have this tool in their arsenal, at least for now.

Looking ahead, the Patriots and other teams will have their say during the Annual League Meeting from March 29-April 1 and the Spring League Meeting from May 19-20. These gatherings are crucial as NFL owners come together to propose and vote on potential rule changes. Whether the "tush push" will face another challenge remains to be seen, but for now, it remains a part of the game, adding another layer of strategy for teams aiming to gain those critical extra yards.
