Kyle Williams may be staring at the kind of opening that can change a season.
With A.J. Brown now on injured reserve because of a high-ankle sprain and expected to miss at least a month, the Patriots have a clear need for more juice on offense. Add in Kayshon Boutte being gone and Romeo Doubs turning in a rough Patriots debut, and the path looks a lot cleaner for the Baltimore native to get real run.
That’s especially notable because New England has already shown plenty of faith in Williams. The Patriots took him in the third round last year, head coach Mike Vrabel had high praise for him during training camp, and the team may have felt comfortable moving on from Boutte because of what Williams can offer.
His rookie season was solid, if unspectacular: 10 catches on 21 targets for 209 yards and three touchdowns. He even hauled in a reception in the Super Bowl. But the flashes were there, and in limited work he showed why the Patriots are intrigued.
The big selling point is easy to spot. Williams has elite speed and a quick release, and right now his game is still built around a pretty simple idea: get him on a go route and let him run past people. That one trait can still tilt a defense, and with Brown sidelined, New England could use Williams as a way to stretch the field and force opponents to respect the deep ball.
It’s not ideal for the Patriots to lean on him this early in the season, but they may not have much of a choice. They need explosiveness, and they need a different look on offense without Brown. The 23-year-old can provide some of that, even if he’s still behind Doubs, DeMario Douglas and Mack Hollins in the pecking order.
The bigger picture is encouraging, too. Williams is young, talented and clearly valued by the organization.
His issues as a route runner and with physicality are the kind of things a team can work on. What can’t be coached is the speed and burst he already brings.
He’s not ready to step in and replace Boutte, and he’s not suddenly Drake Maye’s top target. But the tools are there for Williams to become a major player down the line, and this stretch could be his first real chance to show it.
