Three weeks after Jaylen Brown was sent to the Philadelphia 76ers, a short Jayson Tatum clip has given Celtics fans another reason to wonder whether the breakup in Boston is getting messier by the day.
The moment came from Tatum speaking to kids at his basketball camp, where he talked about the kind of people he wants around him.
“Being around somebody that feels like they know it all, I don’t wanna be around that person,” Tatum shared to the group. “I don’t wanna be the smartest person in the room, I want to learn from somebody else.”
The clip was later shared on Instagram story, which is part of why some people saw it as more than just a motivational message. It wasn’t a case of someone else clipping his words and putting them in a different light. Tatum chose to frame it that way himself.
That’s why the reaction has been so loud. Brown has spent the past few weeks at the center of the conversation after Boston moved him for what many viewed as a surprisingly light return: a 36-year-old Paul George, a 2028 first-round pick swap, Philadelphia’s 2031 first, and two second rounders.
The deal immediately raised eyebrows. Then came the wave of national commentary trying to explain why the Celtics would move on from one of their franchise pillars.
Brown’s own comments about this past season being his favorite, even after the team won a championship two years ago, became part of the discussion. So did the “smartest man in the room” label that some critics attached to him.

Of course, there’s always the chance this is just confirmation bias doing its thing. Celtics fans are still trying to make sense of why the team was so willing to move Brown, so a clip like this naturally invites speculation. If Tatum’s message really was aimed at Brown, it would fit neatly into the suspicion that something went wrong behind the scenes.
