Jason Varitek's Red Sox Reunion Gets Surprise Update

Despite fan hopes for a reunion, Red Sox president Sam Kennedy confirms that Jason Varitek remains firmly outside the team fold, with no plans for his return.

Jason Varitek is not part of the Red Sox organization in any capacity, and Sam Kennedy finally said it plainly.

That was the clearest takeaway from Boston’s end-of-season press conference on Monday, where Kennedy was asked about the former catcher and gave a much more direct answer than the one the club offered back in April.

“We've connected with each other, but I've got no update on that ... but [we] look forward to continuing dialogue as we move forward,” Kennedy said.

The message, stripped down, was simple: Varitek is not working with the team right now, and there was no hint from Kennedy that a reunion is close.

That matters because the whole situation around Varitek became murky months ago, when the Red Sox tried to explain his status in a way that never really held up publicly. At the time of Alex Cora’s firing, there was confusion over whether Varitek had been swept up in the changes. The club described his situation as a “reassignment,” but the specifics of that move never came into focus.

Varitek’s standing only made the episode more delicate. He is a Red Sox legend, a fan favorite, and someone who spent his entire playing career in Boston. So when the story started to look like he had been pushed out, the optics were always going to be rough.

That’s part of why Kennedy’s comments on Monday felt like an effort to finally close the book on the version of the story that lingered for five months. He didn’t dodge the question this time. He acknowledged the conversation, said the sides have connected, and made clear that Varitek is not with the organization.

There was also a broader coaching context to all of this. Chad Tracy said on Monday that he will be talking with Boston’s leadership about possible coaching changes in the coming days. But if Varitek was ever going to come back into the picture, Kennedy’s remarks shut that door for now.

The Red Sox clearly understand what Varitek means to their fanbase. It also seems possible that the organization wanted to keep him around. But with his ties to Cora and the way the situation unfolded, it became too tangled to smooth over.

So while Boston may still be weighing changes on the coaching staff, Varitek won’t be part of that discussion.

Patriots Face One Big Week 5 Concern Beyond Drake Maye

The Patriots head into Week 5 with plenty of attention on Drake Maye and the offense, but their preparations for the Raiders have also been shaped by what has happened on the other side of the ball. New England has spent the week sorting through matchups, leaning on its defensive strengths while trying to account for a Las Vegas team that brings its own questions on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis have both been out of practice on Wednesday and Thursday, leaving New England with a cornerback situation worth monitoring as the week moves on. Rhamondre Stevenson has also been limited because of the ankle injury that sent him out late in Sundays game, so the Patriots are carrying a few important health concerns into a game that already carries plenty of intrigue beyond the rookie quarterback. A.J. Brown Looks More Right Than Ever About Leaving Eagles

A.J. Browns move out of Philadelphia keeps looking less like a surprise and more like a turning point for both sides. The receiver arrived in New England after rumors of a fraying relationship with Jalen Hurts and a growing sense that the Eagles locker room was not as steady as it once seemed, and the fallout has only sharpened since then as Philadelphias offense has struggled to find its footing.

The bigger picture around the Eagles has only gotten murkier with the kind of roster turnover that can shake a contenders identity. Losing Lane Johnson to retirement and moving Cam Jurgens for future draft picks have added to the unease, and the visible tension around the team has made Browns departure feel even more significant in hindsight for a Patriots team watching the other sideline stumble. Josh Allen Just Shut Down One Patriots-Bills Storyline

Josh Allen spent part of the conversation after Buffalos win over the Patriots shutting down any notion that a knee issue changed the way he ran the ball. The concern had followed a low hit to his left knee in Buffalos Week 3 win over the Chargers, and after New England saw him work through another division game, the question naturally lingered around whether the injury was limiting his mobility.

Allen did not leave much room for that theory, saying there was no truth to the idea and that he felt great. Against the Patriots, he completed 23 of 33 passes for 253 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while also scoring once on the ground, and the Bills now move on with their quarterback insisting the knee is not a storyline at all.
