Houston Texans Stun Fans by Parting Ways With Key Coach

Texans make a surprising coaching change, signaling possible shifts in their strategy as they look ahead to future seasons.

The Houston Texans are making waves with a significant coaching change, as they've parted ways with quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson. Johnson, who took on the role in 2023 alongside head coach DeMeco Ryans, played a pivotal role in developing CJ Stroud, a relationship that dates back to Stroud's high school days.

This decision follows the Texans' playoff exit at the hands of the New England Patriots in the AFC Divisional Round. Reports indicate that the split was mutual, with both Johnson and the Texans' offensive staff agreeing it was time for a change. Stepping into the void is senior offensive assistant and pass game specialist Jerry Schuplinski, who will now take on additional responsibilities.

Johnson's departure is intriguing, especially considering he was in the running for a second interview with the Philadelphia Eagles for their offensive coordinator position, a role that ultimately went to Sean Mannion. This move comes on the heels of the Texans parting ways with offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik just over a year ago.

CJ Stroud, the Texans' franchise quarterback, is entering a critical juncture in his career. With one year left on his rookie contract and a potential fifth-year option for 2027, the Texans have decisions to make.

Stroud's performance has seen some fluctuation; he threw for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns against five interceptions in his rookie season. However, over the past two seasons, his stats include 39 touchdowns and 20 interceptions, averaging 218.3 yards per game.

Notably, he struggled in the playoff loss to the Patriots, throwing four interceptions.

Despite the ups and downs, Texans general manager Nick Caserio has voiced strong support for Stroud, dismissing trade rumors as "moronic" during the NFL Combine. Stroud himself has expressed his desire to remain in Houston, stating his love for the city and his commitment to turning things around.

As the Texans navigate these changes, the focus will be on how Schuplinski's expanded role impacts Stroud's development and the team's offensive strategy moving forward. The Texans are clearly in a period of transition, and all eyes will be on how these moves shape their future.
