Rob Gronkowski knows exactly where Travis Kelce stands in the chase for another piece of tight end history.
Appearing Wednesday on the Kay Adams Show, the former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers star said Kelce has a real shot to close the gap on his career touchdown total if the Kansas City Chiefs tight end keeps rolling.
"I think he could possibly catch it this year if he keeps up this pace that he's got going on for this season," Gronkowski said.
"It's a possibility that he could pull it off this year. That would be one of the best years ever at the tight end position to be at that age and just dominate like that.
"It just makes sense why he came back."
Kelce is 13 touchdowns behind Gronkowski’s career total, and after a 2025 season that fell short of his usual standard, he decided to return for at least one more run alongside Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.
By his own lofty bar, 2025 was a quiet year for Kelce. He finished the season with 76 catches, 851 receiving yards and five touchdowns across 17 games as Kansas City missed the playoffs for the first time in 11 years.
Even so, the veteran still landed a Pro Bowl nod. He had considered retirement after the season, but ultimately chose to run it back.
Gronkowski and Kelce have spent years stacking up awards, numbers and arguments about who sits atop the tight end mountain. Gronkowski was taken by the Patriots in the second round of the 2010 NFL draft, while the Chiefs grabbed Kelce in the third round of the 2013 draft. Both helped reshape what the position could look like.
Gronkowski built his case as one of the most complete tight ends ever. He was a dominant receiver, a strong blocker and a force in big moments, while serving as a trusted target for Tom Brady in both New England and Tampa Bay.
Kelce brought a different style. The Cincinnati product has played more like a wideout than a traditional tight end, with elite route-running and enough blocking ability to fit Andy Reid’s offense. He has also made his mark in the postseason.
The record book still gives each man his own slice of history. Gronkowski owns the mark for most total touchdowns in a season by a tight end with 18, and he was the first tight end to lead the league in receiving touchdowns. Kelce holds the record for most career postseason receiving touchdowns by a tight end with 20, along with the most seasons with 1,000 or more receiving yards by a tight end with seven.

Patriots Head To Buffalo With A Problem They Cant Afford
The Patriots are heading into a pivotal AFC East trip with an injury report that already looks longer than they would like, and Christian Gonzalez is the name that stands out most. New England listed 11 players ahead of its Week 4 matchup with the Bills, and the top cornerback missed practice with a shoulder injury after getting hurt in the previous game but finishing it.
Drake Maye is dealing with a shoulder issue of his own, though offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said it has not forced the Patriots to alter the game plan. Even so, heading to Buffalo with one of the rosters key defensive pieces banged up and the rookie quarterback less than full strength adds another layer of urgency to a game New England could use to steady its season. Tom Brady And Julian Edelman Just Had Fun With Mike Tomlin
Mike Tomlins latest off-field reveal has turned into an unexpected source of amusement for some familiar Patriots voices. The former Steelers coach, now an NBC broadcaster, posted a 20-minute YouTube video showing off a long-running Minecraft project, one he said he had been building for 12 years as an intricate city. The clip spread quickly on social media, and it did not take long for Julian Edelman and Tom Brady to chime in with the kind of lighthearted teasing that tends to follow anything involving Tomlin and the Patriots.
For New England fans, the jokes land because the rivalry history is baked in. Brady and Edelman have both had plenty of success against Tomlins Steelers in the postseason, including that memorable 2017 AFC Championship Game win, and the back-and-forth added another small chapter to a familiar matchup. Tomlins football rsum against those two still matters, but the reaction to his Minecraft obsession showed that even after all these years, the old Patriots-Steelers edge is alive and well. Patriots Backlash Is Getting Ugly As Drake Maye Frustration Grows
The Patriots have spent the first few weeks of the 2026 season dealing with more noise than they probably wanted, and the 1-2 start has only made it louder. Mike Vrabels offseason controversy with former reporter Dianna Russini already stirred up plenty of attention after photos of the two led to her resignation from The Athletic, following an internal investigation that found a violation of newsroom standards.
Now the frustration is spilling over onto the field, with sports analyst Bill Simmons relaying his fathers harsh view that the offseason drama has helped drag the team down. He also expressed disappointment in Drake Mayes play, adding another layer to a start that has left the Patriots trying to quiet both the backlash and the growing unease around their young quarterback.
