Eagles Set Date To Trade AJ Brown To Patriots Move

Eagles weigh a pivotal post-June 1 trade decision with AJ Brown as Patriots emerge as key contenders.

The Philadelphia Eagles are navigating a tricky situation with their star wide receiver, AJ Brown. General Manager Howie Roseman is keen on keeping Brown in Philadelphia, but it's clear that Brown's feelings might not align with that plan. He's expressed dissatisfaction with his role in the offense and seems to have some friction with quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Enter the New England Patriots, who are reportedly staying in the conversation about bringing Brown into their fold, potentially reuniting him with head coach Mike Vrabel. According to NFL insider Mike Florio, the Patriots are leading the charge to acquire Brown, but any potential deal will likely have to wait until after June 1.

Why the wait? Trading Brown before June 1 would hit the Eagles with a hefty $40 million in dead cap money. However, if they designate the trade post-June 1, that financial burden is significantly reduced.

Florio also pointed out that the Eagles may have no choice but to move on from Brown this season if he's unwilling to see his contract through in Philadelphia. Holding onto him could lead to long-term salary cap complications:

"I had a source familiar with the Eagles' future cap dynamics stress that trading Brown before next year is essential," Florio noted. "Waiting could create major cap issues given their existing commitments."

The Patriots, meanwhile, have already bolstered their receiving corps by signing former Green Bay Packers WR Romeo Doubs. Adding a talent like Brown would provide a substantial boost for quarterback Drake Maye and could enhance their prospects of making a deep playoff run next season.
