Drake Maye’s second day of Patriots training camp didn’t exactly read like a statement session.
After an MVP-calibre season that helped carry New England all the way to the Super Bowl last year, the quarterback arrived at camp with bigger expectations on his shoulders. But according to Patriots insider Evan Lazar, day 2 brought a rougher edge than the Patriots would have wanted.
“Shaky day for Drake Maye,” Lazar wrote on X. “Defense made several plays on the ball. Maye was a little inaccurate.”
The numbers backed up the report. Maye was said to have gone 6-for-12 and threw his first interception of camp when Patriots safety Craig Woodson picked him off after a pass sailed too high for A.J. Brown, who was traded to the Patriots in the offseason.
It wasn’t all about Maye’s misses, though. Woodson and Christian Gonzalez stood out on the defensive side and made life difficult for the offense throughout the session.
Even with that uneven start to camp, Maye is already looking ahead to the biggest early test on the schedule. He took heat for his underwhelming showing against the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl LX loss in February, and now the Patriots open the season with a rematch in Week 1 on the road in Seattle.
“I think just come firing off,” Maye said. “You know, we start with Week 1.
I think that speaks for itself on a rematch. So, I think we got to bring our A-game, and it starts in camp.
“It gives us a great mindset for camp of getting things going early and firing all cylinders. So, we got some tough work, but looking forward to it.”
New England also added another target for its quarterback this offseason, signing Romeo Doubs to the offensive roster alongside A.J. Brown as the Patriots continue building out the passing game around Maye.
