The New England Patriots head into summer camp with a lot of new faces around Drake Maye, but the conversation starts and ends with the quarterback. That’s the part of the roster that already looks elite, and it’s the reason Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox tagged Maye as the Patriots’ biggest strength.
Maye’s rise has been swift. After flashing as a rookie in 2024 and finishing as a Pro Bowl alternate, he took a bigger leap in 2025, where the sophomore-year scare never really materialized.
Instead, he put together a season that included a 72% completion rate and the league’s highest quarterback rating. He also finished as an MVP finalist behind Matthew Stafford, with only one vote standing between him and the award.

His combination of arm talent, scrambling ability, and improvisational skills allowed New England to have a dynamic offense last season despite having questionable line depth and a limited amount of reliable receiving targets. With A.J. Brown, Alijah Vera-Tucker, and Caleb Lomu now in the fold, Maye could be in line for yet another impressive jump."
That last part is the big story. The Patriots didn’t need to upgrade at quarterback, but they did spend the offseason trying to make life easier on him.
Up front, they added guard Alijah Vera-Tucker in free agency and drafted swing tackle Caleb Lomu in the first round. Vera-Tucker brings quality when healthy, though his injury history is a real part of the evaluation.
Lomu, meanwhile, arrives as a pass-blocking addition with clear upside. The question now is how much the line actually improves.
At receiver, the team clearly made a bigger splash. Romeo Doubs gives them a reliable No. 2 option, and the trade for A.J.
Brown changed the look of the group entirely. Brown gives Maye a true No. 1 target, and together they should form one of the league’s top quarterback-receiver pairings in 2026.
The Patriots also have a strong backfield tandem with Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson.
That’s the setup around a quarterback who already looks like one of the NFL’s best. If the protection holds up and the sacks come down, Maye has the kind of arm talent and running ability that can make the offense dangerous in a hurry. The Patriots are banking on that growth, and if the line really does take a step forward, Maye could push even higher than he already has.
