Drake Maye Just Gave Patriots Fans A Reason To Believe

Drake Maye's second-half transformation propelled the Patriots to a comeback victory over Miami, demonstrating his growing prowess in high-pressure situations.

Drake Maye didn’t look much like a quarterback stuck in a first-half slog once the Patriots came out of the break in Miami.

New England trailed 13-3 at halftime, and Maye had managed only 53 passing yards before the reset. Then the second half turned into his stage. He threw for 146 yards after the break, completed all but one of his passes, and finished with a perfect 158.3 passer rating while accounting for three total touchdowns in the Patriots’ road comeback over the Dolphins.

The big-play damage came quickly. Maye connected with Kyle Williams on a 43-yard touchdown, then later delivered a scrambling throw to DeMario Douglas on the sideline that Douglas turned into a 48-yard score with his legs, stretching New England’s lead to two possessions.

Those two touchdown throws also pushed Maye into a familiar spot in the record book. He now owns the lead for most passing touchdowns of 30-plus yards over the past two seasons with 14, and the Miami game marked his fifth straight outing with at least two passing touchdowns.

Maye’s most important play may have come without the ball leaving his hand for long. On an option look, he rolled right, showed a fake toss to Rhamondre Stevenson, and slipped past the defender who bit on the fake. The two-yard touchdown gave New England the lead and changed the feel of the game.

Afterward, Maye said the run reminded him of a basketball break.

"Hopefully you make the guy guess wrong and we did," he said postgame.

Maye also said the weather played into New England’s cautious first half. Rain affected what the Patriots wanted to do early, and he explained it this way: "This ball, you see different times with the weather, it can be an issue."

The win was New England’s fifth of the season, and it came without three of Maye’s top wide receivers in A.J. Brown, Mack Hollins, and Romeo Doubs. It was also the second time this year the Patriots won after trailing at halftime, with the other coming against Buffalo in Week 4.

Mike Vrabel didn’t hide what he saw from his quarterback.

"He’ll be a great quarterback in the National Football League," he said.

Vrabel also pointed to how Maye handled the offense even with the receiver group thinned out.

"He just throws to the open guy and controls our offense and gets guys in the right spot," Vrabel said. "That’s being one of the best quarterbacks in the league, that’s what the job description requires."

Patriots Suddenly Have A Derrick Henry Question Fans Can't Ignore

The trade deadline always creates a little noise around the league, but this one has a name attached that would instantly change the conversation. Derrick Henry is reportedly in the mix as the Baltimore Ravens weigh whether to move the veteran running back, and the chatter has already reached teams with obvious needs and familiar coaching ties.

New England is among the clubs being mentioned, which makes the speculation hard to ignore for a team still shaping its identity. The connection to Mike Vrabel adds another layer to the discussion, and with John Harbaugh acknowledging that Baltimore could make moves before the deadline, the possibility remains open even without any official deal in place. Patriots Face A Bigger Doubt Than Fans Wanted After Beating Miami

The Patriots walked out of Miami with a win, but it came with the kind of battered feel that can linger beyond one Sunday. New England had to navigate multiple injuries to key offensive players, and the victory did little to quiet the broader debate around where this team really stands right now. Around the league, the weekly rankings have reflected that uncertainty, with some evaluators buying the Patriots as a top-tier club and others still holding back.

Now the attention shifts to Green Bay, where the questions only get sharper. The Packers bring a different set of problems on both sides of the ball, and New England is still sorting through its own offensive health while trying to keep the defense steady enough to carry the load if needed. The win over Miami bought the Patriots some breathing room, but it also left a bigger doubt hanging over what comes next. [Read more 🡒]

Drake Maye Just Blew Up A Criticism Patriots Fans Hate

The Patriots have spent plenty of time this season trying to prove that Drake Maye is more than a promising young quarterback on a rebuilding roster. One of the quieter arguments around him has been whether he can do the job when New England is expected to win, not just when it is scrambling from behind. So far, the answer has been hard to ignore, with the Patriots unbeaten in those spots when favored by at least a field goal and Maye steering the offense with the kind of control that changes the tone of the conversation.

His latest statement came in the comeback over Miami, where the second half looked like the kind of stretch that can swing perceptions around a young quarterback in a hurry. Maye is already drawing elite-level attention from some analysts and has worked his way into the MVP discussion, and the bigger question now is whether the rest of the league is ready to treat that as more than a hot stretch.
