One rep was enough to remind everyone why DeMario Douglas still matters.
In a Patriots wide receiver room that has drawn plenty of attention all offseason, Douglas has been one of the names under the brightest spotlight. The group has real competition now, with the Patriots dealing with the rare problem of having too many playmakers on the roster at once. For Douglas, a fourth-year receiver whose career has swung from promising to nearly vanishing in the span of a year, that meant every practice snap carried extra weight.
There had been hope that Josh McDaniels would be the coach to push Douglas into another tier. McDaniels has a track record of turning undersized slot receivers into stars, so the fit made sense on paper. But that breakthrough never really came in 2025, and plenty of people started to wonder whether Douglas would even stick on the roster.
Then came Wednesday’s joint practice with the Eagles, and Douglas changed the conversation fast.
While most of the attention going in centered on A.J. Brown facing his former team, Douglas delivered the kind of moment that grabs a roster battle by the throat. In one-on-ones, he went right at star cornerback Cooper DeJean and beat him in a sequence that stood out as one of the day’s most lopsided matchups.

The reaction was immediate, because that kind of rep says a lot about where a player stands. For Douglas, it looked like the sort of play that can lock down a spot and quiet the doubt.
And it wasn’t coming out of nowhere. Last season offered flashes of the version of Douglas the Patriots have been waiting for.
He was used almost like a hidden weapon, especially in the game against the Saints, even though one of his touchdowns was wiped out by a penalty. When he’s at his best, Douglas brings speed and the kind of quick, slippery movement that can stress a defense in a hurry.
That skill set matters even more now. The Patriots are staring at a schedule loaded with some of the league’s toughest opponents, and they’ll need receivers who can create separation against quality corners.
With a receiving group led by A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs and, hopefully, Kayshon Boutte behind them, Douglas has a chance to be more than just a depth piece.
If he keeps showing this version of himself, he could end up being a real difference-maker when the games count.
