New England’s preseason opener came and went without Christian Gonzalez on the field, and Mike Vrabel was quick to put the cornerback’s absence in the proper bucket: physical, not something more.
Gonzalez missed Thursday’s game after also sitting out Tuesday’s joint practice against the Indianapolis Colts. That marked his first absence from a practice this summer, and Vrabel explained afterward that the team had Gonzalez in the same treatment group as several other players.
“Christian was unavailable, physically unavailable, for the practice. That’s the clarification,“ Vrabel said postgame.
”Just like other players that I told to have treatment, and everybody has a plan here, there were other guys that were in that same category. If you want to list the names, Christian Elliss, Brenden Schooler, Harold Landry, Christian Barmore, et cetera.
So, make sure they’re all included. They were all in the same group of what they did.“
The timing is notable because Gonzalez had finished Monday’s training camp practice with a hard fall while battling Romeo Doubs for a jump ball in the end zone. He looked shaken up on the play, though it did not seem to be a major injury.
The 23-year-old is also in the middle of contract talks with New England as he heads into the fourth year of his rookie deal. With All-Pro status in hand, Gonzalez is positioned to help reset the cornerback market. Before Tuesday, he had been a full participant in training camp after being limited during mandatory minicamp this spring.

Patriots Took A Chance On An Unusual Athlete For One Reason
Mitch Van Vooren has built an unusual path to the doorstep of pro football, and it starts with a track resume most players simply do not have. The former Marquette hurdler used an extra year of eligibility tied to the COVID-19 pandemic to shift his focus toward football, then transferred to St. Norbert College to keep chasing both sports at once.
While playing football at the Division III level, Van Vooren also kept running track and earned First Team All-American honors in the 400m hurdles. That kind of versatility is exactly what has made his name worth watching, since he is trying to turn a rare athletic background into a real NFL opportunity. [Read more 🡒]
Patriots Rookie Caleb Lomu Is Feeling The Pressure At Tackle
Caleb Lomu arrived in training camp with the sort of expectations that come with being a first-round pick, and the Patriots have wasted no time testing him at one of the toughest spots on the line. He has been working mostly at left tackle while also getting reps on the right side, a reminder that New England wants to see how quickly he can handle the kind of versatility and pressure that come with playing tackle in the NFL.
Morgan Moses has been there to help smooth the transition, urging Lomu to keep his focus on small, daily gains rather than trying to solve everything at once. Lomu has openly talked about the challenge of adjusting to different tackle positions, and the next stretch of camp will be about how much cleaner his technique can get as the competition for playing time tightens. Mike Vrabel Is Still Dealing With Offseason Fallout At Patriots Camp
Mike Vrabel is still having to answer for the offseason storm that followed him into Patriots camp, where the questions are no longer about the photo that set everything off but about how he has handled the fallout since. The public scandal involving Vrabel and ESPN's Dianna Russini, which both denied was romantic, has already led to Russini's resignation and left the New England coach managing a far more personal kind of scrutiny than the usual training camp chatter.
During a recent media session, Vrabel was pressed on the counseling he disclosed after the controversy and framed it as part of a broader effort to keep improving himself in both his personal and professional life. He also pointed to the Patriots' larger push around mental fitness, saying it is a priority for coaches, staff and players as the team works through camp with the attention still lingering around its head coach.
