Christian Gonzalez wasted no time making the Patriots look smart for paying him.
New England came up short against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 after three interceptions from Drake Maye helped seal the loss, but Gonzalez gave the Patriots at least one bright spot. Gordon McGuinness of PFF named the cornerback to his Week 1 NFL Team of the Week in the FLEX: CB category, a quick sign that Gonzalez’s new deal already has some early proof behind it.
That deal is a monster one: $135M, which made Gonzalez the highest-paid Patriot and the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. He backed it up right away with a performance that stood out on a defense trying to hold together while the offense struggled badly with turnovers.
PFF laid out the numbers behind the selection. "Christian Gonzalez is a cornerback for the New England Patriots who earned a 87.3 overall PFF defensive grade in the 2026 season, 3rd among 91 qualified cornerbacks.
His PFF coverage grade of 86.2 ranked 3rd among 91 qualified cornerbacks. His run-defense grade of 66.3 ranked 32nd at the position.
He recorded 0 interceptions on the season.
Gonzalez broke up 2 passes in coverage. He allowed a 39.6 passer rating when targeted by opposing quarterbacks.
He surrendered 1 reception in coverage. He also contributed 2 solo tackles in run support and open-field situations."
For the Patriots, that’s exactly the kind of return they needed from their top defensive player. Gonzalez is going to be asked to handle opposing No. 1 receivers all season, and the rest of the defense - especially the edge group - will need to chip in with sacks to help the unit as a whole.
The loss to Seattle stung, especially after New England had a chance to flip the script and instead walked away with a defeat that felt like a missed statement win. Now the focus shifts quickly to Week 2 and the home opener against Pittsburgh.

Brown out for the game and expected to miss an extended stretch, the Patriots also need the dynamic and electric TreVeyon Henderson back. His return, along with a cleaner game from Maye, could help New England bounce back and get to 1-1.
