Cam Newton’s reaction to being laid off by ESPN brought the Patriots right back into the conversation, and not in a flattering way for New England.
Newton was one of the biggest names caught up in ESPN’s annual layoffs this week, and the response around him came fast. Plenty of Patriots fans were more than happy to pile on, and that only intensified once Newton started talking about the last time he says he was truly blindsided by a business move.
According to Newton, that moment came when the Patriots cut him.
“The day Matt Patricia and Bill Belichick released me from the New England Patriots was the day that nothing else could surprise me in business, and I’m grateful that I have that to be able to refer to because not a lot of people are able to say I’ve been there before.”
Newton said he wasn’t shocked by ESPN’s decision and expressed appreciation for the chance he had there. But he also tied that feeling back to his exit from New England, saying that being let go by the Patriots was the last time he was surprised by anything in business.
That line will not sit well with plenty of Patriots fans, especially given how Newton has spoken about the team in recent years. Through his podcast, “4th & 1,” and his ESPN appearances, he has become a regular voice on NFL topics, and his comments about Drake Maye have drawn plenty of frustration in New England. Newton has repeatedly made clear that he didn’t buy all the hype around the 23-year-old and has been openly pessimistic about his NFL future.
His Patriots exit came after the team used its first-round pick on Mac Jones earlier in 2021, and reports for months had said the rookie was adjusting to Josh McDaniels’ offense far more easily than Newton and was pulling ahead in the competition for the starting job. By the time roster cuts arrived, Belichick’s choice to move forward with Jones at QB1 was hardly a stunner.
Newton, though, clearly remembers it differently.
Now, five years later, Newton and the Patriots are in very different places. The team is trying to keep its Super Bowl window open, and Newton has his own lane in media, even if he and Patriots fans remain firmly at odds.
