AJ Brown wasted no time making noise in New England.
The star wide receiver, traded from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Patriots in June 2026, was at the center of a heated training camp exchange on Thursday when he and Christian Gonzalez nearly came to blows during practice. The moment stood out in a competitive team drill and got intense enough that the two had to be separated as the Patriots moved from one period to the next.
According to the report, Gonzalez’s edge and trash talk after a few strong coverage reps helped spark the confrontation. Once the emotion cooled, both players went back to their own sides and the practice carried on.
Gonzalez later framed it as the kind of battle that comes with facing elite talent every day. “He’s a No. 1 receiver in this league going up against the No. 1 corner,” Gonzalez said, according to a video shared by Reiss. “I mean, that’s how it’s going to go.”
The Patriots brought Brown in to be exactly that kind of difference-maker. New England sent Philadelphia a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick in the deal, which was completed after the June 1 salary cap threshold. The move gave Drake Maye a true top receiver and reunited Brown with head coach Mike Vrabel.
It also came after the Patriots lost to Seattle in Super Bowl LX, with the front office clearly intent on giving Maye an elite downfield target. Brown now joins free-agent addition Romeo Doubs in reshaping the team’s wide receiver group, especially after the release of Stefon Diggs.
And the fit makes sense on the field. Maye was among the league’s most accurate and highest-rated passers on throws traveling 10+ air yards last season, and Brown gives him a receiver built to attack that part of the game. Since entering the league in 2019, Brown ranks third in the NFL in yards per reception.
That’s the kind of player defenses have to game-plan for, and the kind of presence that gives New England a legitimate “alpha” No. 1 option. The Patriots believe they’ve got one more piece that can push them back toward the Super Bowl conversation.
