Tikey Hayes’ Nebraska stint is over almost as quickly as it began.
The running back, who arrived in Lincoln just ahead of Big Ten Media Days, is no longer with the Huskers after being dismissed from the team for reasons that were not made public. His stay lasted a little more than a month, making for one of the strangest Nebraska football stories of the year.
Hayes came to Nebraska after transferring to Iowa Western last year, and because he joined the program through the JUCO route, he did not have to deal with the same portal restrictions that would have applied if he had moved straight from Penn State. That unusual path helped make his arrival stand out from the start.
The 5-foot-11, 205-pound back was brought in to give Nebraska another option in a running backs room that needed bodies. He had been in the mix with Mekhi Nelson, Isaiah Mozee, Jamal Rule and the rest of the group, and he even logged carries with the top offensive units during Saturday’s scrimmage.
Then came the sudden exit. Nebraska did not practice Sunday, and when the team returned Monday, On3 reported that Hayes was no longer part of the roster.
His departure also appears to fit into a broader picture at the position. The return of Mekhi Nelson may have reduced the need for Hayes in the first place. Hayes had seemed like insurance in case Nelson’s legal issues were not resolved and he ended up being dismissed, but those issues were cleared up, and Nelson was fully cleared to return on the first day of Big Ten Media Days.
Now Nebraska is left to sort through the backfield without the extra depth it expected from Hayes. The staff will have to count on Nelson, Mozee and Rule to shoulder the load, especially with Anthony Colandrea now in the quarterback room and the running game expected to play an even bigger role in the offense.
Hayes’ exit, after barely a month with the Huskers, stands out as one of the more unusual episodes of the Matt Rhule era in Lincoln.

Nebraskas Reworked Secondary Just Opened A Fascinating Ballhawk Battle
Nebraskas defensive backfield is going through a real reset heading into 2026, and the changes have created one of the more intriguing competitions on the roster. With the Cornhuskers sorting out roles in a new 4-2-5 look, the secondary is being asked to define itself quickly, and names like Donovan Jones, Victor Evans III and Dwayne McDougle III are suddenly central to that conversation. The additions from the transfer portal only add to the sense that this group could look very different by the time the season starts.
What makes the picture especially interesting is how much turnover can change the ball production at the back end. Nebraska is trying to build a secondary that is not just dependable, but disruptive, and the players in the mix all bring a case for why they could end up making the biggest plays on the ball. If the Cornhuskers are going to turn this reworked unit into a strength, they may have to find out quickly which defenders are best suited to seize those opportunities. [Read more 🡒]
Jamarques Lawrence Could Give Nebraska Fans An Awkward Return To Lincoln
Jamarques Lawrences path through college basketball has already taken a few turns, and Nebraska fans briefly had reason to wonder if it might circle back to Lincoln again. The former Cornhuskers guard was eligible for a fifth year after the latest rulings, which at least opened the door to another stay in the program where he had already been part of a transfer-heavy journey from Nebraska to Rhode Island and back again for the 2025-26 season.
Instead, the next step appears to be somewhere else, with Lawrence exploring options away from Lincoln as he looks to continue his college career. Michigan, USC, Troy and Fresno State have all been in touch, leaving Nebraska to watch a familiar name move toward yet another new home rather than setting up the awkward reunion some fans may have been bracing for.
