Nebraska’s open practice on Tuesday offered a few early clues in the fall camp race, and the biggest one came at running back. Isaiah Mozee was the first man up in the drills, taking the No. 1 reps throughout the portion of practice that was open to the media. That alone doesn’t settle anything, but it was enough to get attention.
Steve Sipple thinks it matters. On 93.7 The Ticket, he said, “There are some insiders that have told me, ‘You need to mention Mozee more as a possible starter. Isaiah Mozee is 100% a threat to start at running back.”
Mozee’s rise is easy to understand. He arrived as a wide receiver, has climbed to 215 pounds, and last season handled the ball 40 times for 270 yards.
His 26 rushing attempts produced 115 yards, an average of 4.4 per carry. Nebraska has also had him working on becoming a more effective runner between the tackles, which fits the way this battle is shaping up.
This doesn’t look like a one-back show. Mekhi Nelson is expected to have a role as well, and Jamal Rule should be in the mix too.
Nebraska isn’t headed for a bell-cow setup like it had in 2025, so the starting label may matter less than the distribution of touches. Still, if practice is any indication, Mozee has the edge right now.
There were other notes from the open session on both sides of the ball. Sipple said Victor Evans has been running with the No. 1 defense a lot, while Rob Aurich told the media that Jeremiah Charles has had a strong camp. Addison Williams also mentioned Danny Odem.
No matter who ends up starting, Nebraska is going to need more than just Andrew Marshall and Donovan Jones, the nickel, to carry the load in the secondary. Evans, Charles and Odem all appear positioned for meaningful snaps.
Linebacker is another spot worth watching. Vincent Shavers may end up coming off the bench this season, with Dexter Foster and Owen Chambliss appearing to have the inside track on the starting jobs based on what was seen at open practice.
The roster size is also hard to miss. This Nebraska team has 26 players listed at 300 pounds, including nine on the defensive line. One of those linemen, Gabe Moore, was injured during practice.
On the recruiting front, Nebraska is making noise with a pair of 2028 four-star targets from the Kansas City area. Tight end Israel Johnigan, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound prospect ranked No. 299 overall by Rivals, is one to know. Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine has Iowa State as a slight favorite, but Bryan Munson of Husker Online says the Huskers lead for the blue-chip tight end, and Nebraska will host him for a Gameday visit this fall.
The other name is wide receiver Baron Marshall. At 6-foot-3 and 175 pounds, he is ranked No. 203 overall in the 2028 class by Rivals. Nebraska has already hosted him six times, and the Huskers lead in the Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine.
Nebraska has had real success in the Kansas City area, helped in part by Jamar Mozee, and the program seems to be in position to keep adding more blue-chip talent from that pipeline in 2028.
